Growing your hair out
on: October 11, 2018, 07:09:13 PM
Anyone ever grow their hair out? I am on month 2 or 3 and waiting on it all to get long enough to shape up. It seems like the awkward stage lasts forever.

Mine went all the way down to my arse for years.  Having it short is nice, having it long is nice but the in between phase really sucks.

I also had long hair when I was younger. It can take a while to get past the awkward stage especially if you have curly hair like me. Once it's all long enough to pull back in a pony tail it gets easier to manage.

6 months to a year depending on how short you start with.

I had long hair from my mid-teens to mid-twenties, then wore it short till I started wearing my hair long again in my late thrirties. I currently have a shoulder length bob. My hair is quite curly, and if I pull my fringe straight with my head level, my fringe touches my collar bone.

As to how long it will take before you're happy with it, depends on your hair and face. My hair being quite thick and curly, needs to be longer than some other people's before it starts hanging down, instead of just sticking up all over the place. Some people's "bad phase" lasts weeks, while for others it's months.

Rate of growth for most people is 3mm or 1/8" a week, which is what the numbered guards on hair trimmers are stepped in. That's what the numbers mean. A #3 cut is 3 weeks growth, or 3/8" long.

I've had long or very long hair multiple times.

I've found that the best way to pass the awkward stage is to both be patient and have a good hairdresser.
He or she will allow you to look good while in the transitory phase... But the result is that it'll be a bit slower to reach the target length.

Here's me in the awkward hair phase with Ray Kirk in 2012.  My uber curly hair makes the awkward phase last pretty well forever.

Its not too bad with a hat

Without a hat its a bit rough

I am trying to train it to curl up where the hat ends for now by brushing it that way. End goal is maybe something similar to this. Really hoping my body will figure out how to grow a beard.

I had long hair when I was in high school, but it didn’t get as long as I wanted.
Looking at old pictures reminds me that I need to get back in shape.

I didn't cut my hair from late 2016 to just a couple of months ago.  It didn't look too bad but I didn't enjoy pulling out clumps and combing through tangles every time I combed my hair and sometimes it irritated my scalp as if I was wearing a tight hat.  So, with the length of my hair weighing heavy on my mind, I finally cut it back to about 1/4 inch.

I've never grown mine out. When it gets to the point it tickles my ears it gets cut off as short as the clippers will allow.  I wouldn't care if I went bald

Cut off 3 pony tails during my younger years....

Long hair made me look less scary and more approachable to the girls, confused a lot of men that would ordinarily pick a fight with a long-haired barstool, then they see the rest of me and the will leaves them.

I missed national service and the bush war by about 3 years, so culturally short back & sides and going to church was very much the done thing.....

A couple more of me- first during my Musketeer phase when I was growing it long the second time in my life, and the other is when I was about 19 or 20 and I had it long for the first time in my life.

This is me the day I cut it off.  In fact, i could grab a strand of it and stretch my arm all the way out and there were still several inches of hair beyond my finger tips.  It was so curly it barely came down to the bottom of my chest, but when wet it would hang down past my waist.

The worst time to have long hair is winter because wet hair will freeze when you are outside (not fun) and it will keep things like hats and jacket collars from sealing up properly around you, and let cold air in.  These were some of the main reasons I cut it off.

Even though it was very long, you can see how short it looked in this photo I had taken with the Trailer Park Boys.
