Greatest debut album?
on: October 14, 2018, 10:36:20 PM
Magentus's post over here got me thinking about the greatest debut album.  I've not listened to Boston - Boston yet, but I'd say that it would be one of these three:
Bjork - Debut
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Portishead - Dummy

Looking at these choices, they're from a short period in time so there must be other 'greatest' debuts out there.  What do you reckon?

I can think of a few

Pearl Jam - Ten
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
The Who - My Generation
Led Zep - Led Zep
The Clash - The Clash

My top are:

Jimi Hendrix: Are You Experienced
Led Zeppelin

these are awesome, but not in same ballpark

Guns & Roses: Appetite, Boston, Lynryd Skynyrd, when I was 13 probably would have said The Doors

And lastly, SRV, System Of A Down, Traffic

Good calls with Black Sabbath, the Who and Zep!

For my money I'd add Boston-Boston(if you read the background it essentially was performed and recorded by Tom Schultz. The credited musicians were the touring band!) and, although it's a bit off into folk,I'd add Seth Lakeman-Punch Bowl. I'd add Queen-Queen 1 and Jethro Tull-Stand Up to the list. Both bands arrived fully formed, with their sound well nailed.
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

There´s a theory (not mine) that these days bands with a superbly great debut album get contracted by Sony to do four new albums in four years. Inevitably, the second album is as good as the first, maybe even better, but then the pressure becomes unbearable and later albums are much worse, or never released at all.

It could be argued that Jethro Tull really didn't find their sound until Benefit or even Aqualung. It should also be pointed out that This Was was their debut album, not Stand up...

With that said, I'm a big fan and Stand Up was a great album.  ;)

One of my favorites (which isn't named yet) is Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine.

Love that album and it finds its way into my (car) CD player on a regular base, even 26 years after it was released.

Many great choices above, but for me it can't be anything else but Appetite for Destruction from Guns N' Roses. Not one bad song on that record.
