my low budget cure for axe fever

so,as here has been a lot of cool axes shown lately,i got the flu and i took one old rusty Fiskars axe head with me to the scool,and i did some pretty small mods to the head,as its was very simple and used design from late fifties,ist Fiskars axe design #1223.i forged it to totally(IMO) different shape,lightened it a bit,shortened the "eye",made the curve to the root of the blade,and bend the blade a bit,to make it more versatile in bushcrafts,not just for chopping anymore,now i can just carve with it better etc.guys said its a tomahawk-style,maybe it is a bit,as i like those.and tomorrow ill anneal it and finish it.i just hace to figure out some proper hardness for the edge,in HRC scale...?but heres some pics for you to judge.the gray painted part in first pic is the original shape of the axe head.

Nice job, remember softer isnt that bad. Less chipping but think about doing diff on the head If all else fails just ask a Smith. They know everything.

hey guys,i had some loose time at the school today and i had already annealed the axe head,by the old rules i received from some finnish blacksmith,so i think its good now,and it shaves too .So i picked up an old rusty file from shelf,and forged it into somethin like this.the sheath is made in 20 minutes,from an broken saddlebag,it aint fine but its a sheath for starters,and i didt have any more rivets,so theres just that one.it aint any artsy fartsy but i dont mind,at least it gives some protection for a small time,for the blade,until i make a better one.




the axe has been also polished with some bushy steelwool,and i heated it several times to some 90-100 degrees and dipped it in oil...maybe ten times,to give it nice dark blueish finish and to protect from immediate rust.it feels bit like sticky teflon.its slick though but theres also bit of traction.like...velvet?



its raw and coarse on purpose,and also due to lack of time,as i wanted it ready,so i can take it along tonight as we head out to woods.i like that all the marks of making it are visible,and the origin-the old-file is visible too.the other end,on the handle is annealed to be very very hard,to be able to give sparks from firesteels etc.and its ground to sharp edge,partially,it wont cut hand but its enough for scraping steels or hittin them.and the blad eis about 58 hrc,and big enough to make some tinder-wood.im puttin a simple leather lanyard to the sheaths hole-rivet,to carry the knife on belt,and the small fire steel i got from Hawkchucker will be on the lanyard as well.

You can keep them as is and use them most of the time or repair them too like new statis or as you have done given them a new life as something else
