New Dr. Who Swiss Army Knife Quote
on: October 19, 2018, 06:26:36 PM
Over the years, I’ve watched the BBC series Dr. Who here and there when it happens to be one. I know it’s been on featuring different Docters over the years, and in the new season, for the first time, the Doctor is female.

I happened to see the season opener was on so I thought I’d watch just to see how it was with the new Doctor.

Anyway, she had to fashion a new Sonic Screwdriver herself as hers was lost somewhere. So she builds one, then declares to the folks that were present helping her it was finished, but it was more of a Swiss Army Knife rather than just a screwdriver, but without the knife blade cause “only idiots need a knife”.

Wow. What has happened to the UK? I’ve seen for years that the Doctor was anti-gun, but I just thought this obvious PSA on knives they had to throw out there was just ridiculous.

Sorry for the long rant, just irritated me I guess.  ::)

Nothing's happened to the UK, BBC scriptwriters are just the same happy clappy moronic preachers as they always were. Despite their social agenda, the rest of us are doing just fine - or at least the ones that I come in contact with anyway. I've never been called an idiot for carrying a pocket knife.

The writer spent so much time making sure the program  was politically correct he forgot about the story line and had to steal one  :twak:

Well that’s good it was just the usual PC bias writing crap, much like we are getting here in so many of our new shows. Sure gets old though.

And yeah - story line sure seemed like a poor copy of the Predator movie didn’t it? Although I thought the embedding of teeth in his face as trophies was a nice touch. Yikes.

yeah, I already posted about that in the "eBay jail" thread of this subforum:

"So, maybe a bit OT, but I was just watching the new episode of one of my favorite TV Shows ever, Doctor Who.
New season, new Doctor. :woohoo: All was OK so far until this scene:

man, I used to love (and still like) Doctor Who   :dunno:
but it just lost a few points for me after this.   :P  For one, I don't really like the new Doctor, and then there was this dialog...

Doctor: (Fabricates new Sonic Screwdriver from scratch)
Man: "Did you just make that? (referring to the device)"
Doctor: "Sonic screwdriver, well I say screwdriver but it's more multi-purpose than that:
scanner, diagnostics, tin opener...more of a "sonic Swiss Army Knife" only without the knife, only idiots carry knives"

so, as a loyal follower and fan for many years and many different doctors (favorite was Tennant),
all that I have left to say what the **** BBC? , please:"

worst thing is, on the second episode, one of the "idiots" who is with the doctor saves a man from death using a quick, UK illegal, one handed opening knife

so, Ep.1: Only idiots carry knives. Ep.2: an "idiot" cuts something that is choking another character and about to suffocate him to death by quickly using and deploying a thumbstud folder (aka "deadly knife" under UK law eyes  ::)) :dunno:   and it's really uncommon to see knives on the Doctor Who show, let alone one actually being used, and not only displayed or carried ???

I've watched Dr. Who since Tom Baker was THE Doctor. It's been on and off since, but this 'new' doctor and the outright political correctness has lost me. I really don't plan on wasting my time on any new episodes as long as this doctor is there.

I qualify as an idiot  because I carry a pocket knife. In January of 1991, I had to crawl into an over turned old Datsun that was burning to get the driver out. A very large obese lady hanging upside down in a seatbelt in a wreak that was filling with black oily smoke and the seatbelt was ut with the pocket knife I had on me. These self righteous people that declare only an idiot carries a knife, like the present mayor of London, are the idiots in my book. If some TV show insists on farthing that dog poo, I will not watch that show.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Just remember, that Jodie Whittaker can only do what the writers create for her, and I think the writing team has changed, so we cannot expect the same as before.

One day, I was chastised by an incredibly liberal woman for using my blue USN Classic on something, I forget which. I'm not sure if she was offended more by the knife itself, or the US Navy seal on it.

You are spot on - I happened to be thinking of this exact thing just earlier today that perhaps I may have offended some of our members that live elsewhere in our wide world, with different ways of doing things than I am used to, or expect for that matter.

So if I did, my sincere apologies, as I didn’t intend a slight in that regard. Although I still disagree with her that only idiots need a knife. Lol. But behind a screen and keyboard, often times what might be said in jest can be taken way different than intended.

But seriously, this forum, and just one or two others, are the only ones I follow half way regular any longer, due in large part that the political BS can be left at the door, or in its own forum, and we are just a community of SAK enthusiasts sharing our interest.

I find it sad.

To protect us from the 0.001% of nutcases that will use a knife to harm someone, everyone is labelled a criminal and must change their attitude to carting a very useful tool.

Meanwhile, the 0.001% that still use the same knives for the same purpose change nothing.

Imagine 10 years from now.
A man/ woman choking on the street unable to breath.
A man shouts "Does anyone have a knife so I can do a tracheotomy?"

Everyone looks around and shakes their heads.
The man dies.

Then knives everywhere are banned.
No knives allowed anywhere, even at home.
All food has to be cut up at purchase.
Then they ban forks.
Then spoons.
Screwdrivers
Spanners
Bits of wood
Rocks

Back into the stone age we go.

Yep, advanced society, here we come.
tools is what defines us as humans

Joe

Virtue signalling is becoming an art.
as in the Dr Who episode

If you speak the truth, someone will attempt to knock you down.

But the fact is that many many people carry knives, not for murdering people, but simply to do day to day things.
I carry every day, My lunch consists of small tomatoes I like to cut in half to eat.

Just last night, on my way home my spotlights stopped working.
I found that the relay had failed and was smoking, I had to cut the wire to the relay.
It wasn't enough to blow the 25 amp fuse, but in time it would catch fire.
Without my tool I would not have been able to cut said wire.

I have done up screws, crimped wires, cut wires, opened packages, fixed cars, bikes and toys.
I have used it in camping, at work, around the house.
But I have never even considered using to to cut or stab someone, why would I,
I am a black belt martial artist I can do more damage with my hands and feet than a tiny knife.

And yet, as useful as this tool is, it is illegal to carry because of a very small percentage of nutcases who want to harm people.

Can you honestly ever see a criminal pull a Victornox Craftsman or a leatherman wignman tool out to threaten you with?

These are sad times.
PC is destroying the world

As a boy scout, we all carried a pen knife....everyone, everywhere.
My father carried a small blade every day of his 91 years and never threatened anyone
I have carried a knife for all of my , so far, 60 years and never thought of threatening any with it.

The two times I have been threatened in my life, were both solved with my bare hands and a little chat.

If we allow continued draconian laws to be introduced, we will not only resemble 1984, we will have surpassed it.

Finally;
A man once removed all weapons from his people under the guise of benevolent dictatorship.
He went on to become a monster we all know as Hitler.
tools is what defines us as humans

Looks like I did the right thing, when I stopped watching Dr. Who, when Matt Smith(my favorite Dr. Who actor) left. I just didn't like Peter Capaldi and stopped watching.  :(

Hopefully they'll get the show back on track one day. I will wait for another Dr. Who(after Jodie) regeneration and try watching again.

Edit:
The writers have such a lax job, that they can't imagine needing a blade to complete the work or perform day-to-day tasks. Some of us have to actually work and need tools. Some of us know why it is important to have some tools handy and use them. The writers and editors that made that "idiot" comment happen are cushy, diddly squat smurfs.

Lets not make too much of all this. It was one throwaway line, in one episode of a very long running series, that's aimed at 11 year old kids  :pok:

I also think Who stalled after Smith. I'm glad Crapaldi has gone, but not ready to make judgement on Whittaker yet.

The one where he's on his own, in the castle, with the two headed lava thing? Yes, that was a very clever episode, and CrapOldie actually did a decent job in that one. I'm still glad he's gone though.

Matt was great, to me also the "last great Doctor"  :salute:
The writers prolly go to the studio in public transport or their car (repaired by a mechanic), once there they get pre-opened letters and pre-released from the box documents and papers, enjoy instant coffee in finger-rip single serving insta-coffee packs  :ahhh  at the office where the AC, electronics and systems are already repaired and worked on by other speSmurfpillsts  (electricians, plumbers, A/C technicians...) and when their TV breaks at lunch time they call the adequate company or worker to put it back in order,  ::)

so they finally get home to have a pre-packaged and probably pre-cut meal in a Microwave that once stops working won't be opneed to tinker with, but rather be thrown away regardless of the problems it may have and ease of repair, to buy a new one  :dunno:

Personally I thought the episode with the diamond wall was awesome.

the Castle episode was Capaldi's greatest, no doubt (critics and public both think so too) but that might be (who am I kidding, it is) because it was written by the great Steven Moffat, who has written all my favorite Doctor Who episodes (among them "Blink", the most awarded David Tennant's serial and the one featuring the Weeping Angels for the first time), who also wrote the best of the new Sherlock Holmes episodes with Cumberbatch, also who casted Matt Smith and chose him to be the new doctor (great choice), among many other great things

Moffat sadly left the show with the arrival of Jodie, so his role with Dr.Who and involvement in the writing and scripts is now nonexistent

We really lost the best Dr.Who writer with that  :P
