Should this be avoided?

No.  It will dull the blade, but it won't damage it.

Unless you hit a staple or something inside the box, no damage to the blade.
It is surprising how quickly cardboard will dull the edge.

I have not heard this before, but as othered mentioned,it’ll dull your blade quickly. If I’m recalling correctly, cardboard contains silica, which is basically sand.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I think about everyone cuts some cardboard on occasion, but if your work calls for it, get a box cutter with replaceable blades. Save your pocketknife.

This ^^^

Use your knife all you want but a box cutter is really the best tool.

This!

As a pocket knife nut, I used to use my knife of the day for breaking down boxes for recycle. Once I got a bit older and wiser, I no longer punish my knife and Justus a Stanley utility knife or small box cutter for the work. Cardboard is filthy stuff with all kinds of dirt and dirt in the glue. If it's really some third world stuff it can have tiny bits of stone like silica in it and can chip a fine honed edge.

Friends don't let friends use their knife on cardboard unless there absolutely positively no box cutter around.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.
