Is the Leatherman Signal worth it?
on: October 29, 2018, 11:50:55 PM
Hi guys,

I wanted to get a multitool for hiking and camping and stumbled upon the Leatherman Signal. It seams to check off the basics of what I think I would need, but wanted to get some more experienced opinions on whether it's worth the price.

Thanks for the help and info.

Cheers,
Vince

I've only handled one, and not spent any time carrying/using one, but I personally didn't like the Signal for several reasons. If I was going to take a standard Leatherman for outdoorsy stuff, it would be the Wave.

Zoidie will be along shortly to correct me :D

Zoidi 2.0 (beta version, still quite buggy) here

I didn't like the Signal either, but once I started carrying it I got to love it. Still not a fan of the plastic bits, still hoping that they make more options for those plastic bits, still hoping they make a Signal 2.0 with 4 outside tools.
In terms of Wave vs. Signal, I would say it boils down to
Tap Hammer vs. Diamond file
For me, there is no need for sharpening on an outdoor trip (you can do that before you leave), the tap hammer on the other hand will be useful on many occasions.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

For the same money you can get a Super Tool 300 with sheath.

You can use either side of the pliers head as a tapping surface and get more striking power.  Separate blades for PE and SE, even possible to baton the PE with a rock or stout stick.  Plus a good saw blade for cutting fire wood.

Only thing missing is the name sake, a whistle.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

The Signal is a fine tool.  If you are leaning towards it for the ferro rod and whistle then IMO you can get better and should ( ferro rod and whistle ).  It has all the basics that could be needed hiking or camping.  Is it worth the price?  At MSRP sure especially considering the 25 year warranty.  There are some really neat color out now too.

The basics are covered with this tool.  Blade, saw, awl, and hammer.  The additional tools are great for those that camp with a bit more gear.   We saw from the recent season of Alone that a plier and wire cutter could have made some difference in one participants trip.

I think having a look locally if you can so you can get one in hand would be great.

Full disclosure, I carry a Spirit for hikes due to the tool density.  I'll keep a Surge with my Camp gear.  My Signal was more for collecting.  I was super surprised when I got my hands on one tho.  I like the tool but also wished they'd add more OHO tools.

Thanks for the input guys. I forgot to mention that I currently have a Rebar for camping/hiking. I guess the gimmicky features of the Signal intrigued me and I liked the idea of a tap hammer without having to carry another tool.
