What is the main aspect for you to collect SAKs (Victorinox-Wenger-Swiza...)??? :climber:

-Size (58,84...) Mainly 91mm, but I have quite a few 84mm and 58mm too.
-Alox? Some, I basically like cellidor the most.
-Cellidor - Yes, that's my favorite
-Color? - Red as many people will feel more comfortable if they see a small red swiss army knife come out of a pocket.
-Old SAKs? - Yes, I like those a lot!
-SAKs with advertisements? I like a lot of the 58mm Limited Editions decorated scales.
-Models? Favorites are Camper, Yeoman, SwissChamp, MiniChamp, Voyageur and Vagabond.
-Brand? Mainly Victorinox although I have collected some Wenger.
-Rarities? I like them rare if possible and in box.
-Retired? I always like the retired ones like Yeoman and Vagabond.
-Material (silver, gold, titanium, brass, copper, inox, stone, leather...?  I like the horn scales.
-Custom? I do like customs and mods as well.

Some of my boxed prides and joys:
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

Whatever I might find useful.

Even though I don't use all of the SAKs in my collection, I don't buy anything I wouldin't use and don't usually follow any other rules.  I'm not really coerced by colors, logos, materials, etc.  In general I don't buy Wenger because I don't find their tools to be as useful as Victorinox, soldiers (SI) of course being the exception.  Form follows function.

  • I'm not a pessimist, I'm an experienced optimist!
The only knife I half heartedly tried to get many varieties of was the Wenger Traveller, but I get bored easily of owning stuff and not using it, so some have found new homes, a couple are still listed in my for sale thread (SwissBuck Sidekick and Metal 50), one got modded and if I acquire a metal file, a second one will get modded too. I'm keeping a brushed stainless version, a soft touch 14 and an evowood 14, as they do get some usage.

Aside from that, the interest was in knives which I happen to find most useful, which is a varied array with one key common characteristic - scissors. If it hasn't got scissors, it won't get carried.

Many of these favourites are going to be undergoing surgery to refine them a little more. Some will be having their toolset modified, and others will just be gaining custom scales.

84mm Victorinox for me. So far only modern models but I intend on tracking down older models

I'd love a couple of the old pre-named models with pins on show

  • Embrace the SAK
I have a few weaknesses:

-> I love red alox. My collection is modest and it grows at a snails pace... and that is fine.

-> I love the 84mm frame with a unhealthy passion, especially the slimmer ones. Great for shirt pocket carry.

-> my red alox elinox voyageur and lumberjack fit both of the previous categories so hold a special place in my heart. I'd really love an elinox bantam to round out that set!

-> I like layer mods where I add/remove/transplant layers between models. My ability is limited, so I tend to focus on cellidor work where minor mistakes are easily hidden behind the scales.

--> an upcoming mod will be a school-friendly midnight minichamp for my 9yo daughter: take out the two blades and the orange peeler and add the "fork" from a 58mm caddy.  :tu:

My answer is: yes 😀

I collect different companies, from Leatherman, SOG to Hartkopf and SAKs. And that is sometimes a problem. I collect older and new tools, in all handle variations, etc.

I only collect in unused/MINT/NIB condition.

But in every collection are small preferences - this are my actual preferences for SAKs:
- Victorinox 74mm with metal scales
- Victorinox mother of pearl scales
- Wenger 85mm
- Wenger Ranger

Wow...that is a very nice collection you have there. Especially the pinned cellidor. But the horn, that one is the best.  :hatsoff:

1. DAK's (so not only SAK, but also Amefa, Leatherman etc. etc.).

2. Military, Law Enforcement and defence industrie related SAK's.

3. Affordable special or rare models.

4. Some Limited Editions, but not all.

NO custom or modded knives.

For me its the 108mm family.  Most are Victorinox,  but i do have a couple of others.  With the exception of one in Faux Antler the rest are plastic  in both the two diffrent Reds and Green.

I have mostly Victorinox SAKS, but I also have some Wengers.

The majority of my SAKS are 91 mm, but I also have some 58's,74's and 84's

My favorite Vics are SwissChamps, Minichamps, Executives, Cadets, and Rangers.

My favorite Wenger is the Tradesman.

I prefer Cellidor, but I like the Alox Minichamp and Alox Cadet.

I have a variety of colors, but red is my favorite because it does not seem to bother people who don't carry knives

Here are a few of my SAKs

Some wonderful pics.

If this makes sense, I am not an active collector.  I have stumbles upon SAKs that have piqued my interest so I buy them.  Hold on, the only SAKs I actively pursued are the CyberTools.  I got the 29,34,41, and Lite.  Those I actively went after collection wise.  All others I happened upon.  I have 3 84mm Golfers that over the years I acquired.  I am more of a "keeper" when it comes to SAKs than collector.

Did that make sense?

I collect mainly 74mm and 91mm SAKs with as many different scale colors and variations as possible. Preferably in mint condition.
But there's some other random stuff as well. I kind of like them all :)

Not an active collector either, but if I pick up a SAK it needs to be black Alox with a silver shield. Size doesn't matter.

I have a couple of themes in my collection.

The main collections are my 108mm collection and the collection with military/government/presidential emblems.

Here's the current 108mm line-up:

Here's some snap shots of the collection of SAKs with emblems:

I also collect 111mm SAKs with emblems of the Swiss army:

While at the moment I'm not actively searching, I also collect the discontinued 91mm SAKs with grey old style magnifier. Currently I have the Scientist, Passenger, Yeoman original and the Modeler:

Then there's the DAKs. I don't aim to collect all years, just one of each type:

  • Between this & that.
With the exception of a single new knife, I buy cheap used ones of just about any kind that take my fancy. Except for the new one I don't think I've paid more than 32 USD - most, much less. Not a serious, disciplined collector, I'd call myself a magpie instead. Condition isn't important. If a knife functions, I'm happy! :)

I look out for particular models that I think I might use or that pique my curiosity, and ignore others. For instance, although only one gets used, I have three alox Soldiers (unpolished tools and bail; polished tools with keyring; polished tools without keyring). It is a relatively common classic and very useful model that covers many bases. It has interesting variations. But I have little interest in the Farmer because I have other knives with the same saw and greater toolsets that I'm more likely to carry.

I have no interest in expensive collectables and limited editions. That said, if I had the funds, I'd buy one of those LE Swiss knives with the bent handle that caused an uproar a while ago, because it's a unique and original design. 8)

I prefer that anything larger than 58mm has the complete opener layer. My only SAK with the combo tool is a Voyageur. What a great knife, excellent for minimal urban and formal carry. Elegant, slim, and durable. A pity the 84mm scissors models were discontinued. :(

I'm also always on the lookout for cheap SAKs to give away. :)
