I have several pairs of boring red celidor scales from disassembled Vic SAKs. Has anyone tried to use a dye to change the color? I was thinking about trying a blue dye with red scales to see if I could get purple.

Walked over to the grocery store and bought some Rit Navy Blue fabric dye, the old style powder. About 1 gram of the 32 grams in the packet was dissolved in about 4 oz. warm water (just over 100 milliliters). A cracked red Vic scale was submerged for about 10 minutes as an experiment. The result was the celidor did not take up ANY significant amount of blue color, but it works really well on fingers!
Why not try vinyl dye? I would have thought is the most likely method to work.
That's a good idea Smashie. I will look into other dyes. The fabric dyes commonly available are used in water. The celidor (cellidor?) material will not stand up to organic solvents. Even isopropyl alcohol can ruin a celidor scale. The type of solvent will limit the dyes that can be used.
