Changing the color of celidor scales
on: November 04, 2018, 08:20:42 PM
I have several pairs of boring red celidor scales from disassembled Vic SAKs. Has anyone tried to use a dye to change the color? I was thinking about trying a blue dye with red scales to see if I could get purple.

I don't think it will work. Just buy new ones. Lots of available colors.

Walked over to the grocery store and bought some Rit Navy Blue fabric dye, the old style powder. About 1 gram of the 32 grams in the packet was dissolved in about 4 oz. warm water (just over 100 milliliters). A cracked red Vic scale was submerged for about 10 minutes as an experiment.

The result was the celidor did not take up ANY significant amount of blue color, but it works really well on fingers!  :D

So besides from turning the user into a smurf it does nothing ...   :-\

That's too bad, since this would've been a nice and relatively cheap way to get some cool original scales ... thanks for trying it out for us mate  :salute:.

Wonder if white nylon scales could be dyed?

I think the best bet to get custom combos would be to probably take one of those resin casting sets craft/hobby stores carry, copy a Vic scale with the mold, then dye the resin your preferred color.

Try using the same dyes on safety specs instead. You can have a different colour knife everyday, just by swapping specs  :P

Why not try vinyl dye? I would have thought is the most likely method to work.

That's a good idea Smashie. I will look into other dyes. The fabric dyes commonly available are used in water. The celidor (cellidor?) material will not stand up to organic solvents. Even isopropyl alcohol can ruin a celidor scale. The type of solvent will limit the dyes that can be used.

My intention was to reuse the scales in a different way. Making new scales is a possibility that I have not tried yet. There are many fantastic examples on the "show off your sak mod's" thread. Titanium, bubinga, G10, bone, brass, micarta...

That's how vinyl works, by etching the dye into the surface of the material, it is permanent. But you can get some good results from it. Vinyl dye is UV resistant as well so won't fade with sunlight.

The only success I had was de-coloroing silvertech scales. The problem is, too-much heat and they bend, not enough heat and they don't take any color. I will resume the experiment at one point, but at the present, I'm not too optimistic.
