Re-shaping blade
on: November 05, 2018, 03:24:07 PM
Hi everyone
lately i started to whittle with a SAK but the spear point blade is sometimes a  bit annoying. So i want to reshape it to be more like a wharncliffe blade.

I was thinking of two different cuts (maybe i will keep the small spear point and i will cut the big blade to make it more straight). The red one would be nicer but i could never go straight during the cut and then make it sharp would be a pain in the butt (maybe i can sand it down instead of cutting?). The green one would be much easier and would keep the blade sharp.
Any suggestion?

p.s. any problem in cutting the blade with a dremel? i mean, does the temperature ruin the temper?

Thanks :)

I think the green will work better and I just love those Wharncliffe blades. It will keep the blade thickest consistent also.  :like: I did the same to my waves too.

As long as you keep it cool it shouldn't hurt the temper. Just take it slow when cutting it and cool often.

hahah. It was the first time in my life i used a dremel, so the cut could be better, but i went really slow, like minimum speed and not more than a couple seconds of contact at the time.

Sanding/grinding the edge off definitely works.  Or you can get the edge straight-ish with a cutting disc then use a coarse whetstone/diamond stone to create a new straight edge.

Yes there is but I left it intentionally on the other side not really nice, I only have the basic dremel disc and it’s quite large. I should fix it one day. At least it works!

Looks like a great job  :tu:

And I think recreating the nail nick is an impossibility for us modders!  :(
