Waiter blues

So yeah, 1-layer SAKs are fun and all, until you try and use the screwdriver blade to pry open a paint can. Then the whole thing flexes and the scale pops, breaking the plastic around the rivet. D'oh! Not enough layers for rigidity. :/

Contact cement to the rescue...

Charles.

The only Victorinox tools I ever use for prying are the caplifter on a 93mm model, the crate opener/caplifter on a Swisstool Spirit, or the crate opener on a Swisstool, unless it is an emergency.

The combo tool is too thin for most prying regardless of how many layers the SAK has.

The combo tool didn’t bend though. The liners flexed and popped the scale’s rivet connector. Nothing was permanently bent or damaged except the plastic scale. A single layer knife is just not really robust. It flexes a lot.

Smashie -

I like that Rough Rider congress there. Beside SAKs, I have several Rough Riders - good knives, inexpensive too!

I fully agree that a multi-layer SAK is more resistant to bending due to side-forces, and obviously the frame and liners aren't as hard as the combo tool implement.  This is especially true for cellidor SAKs vs ALOX ones. But, if you had a more rigid SAK and were prying with the combo tool, you might find yourself bending the implement rather than the frame.

I also hope my waiter never needs to pry open paint cans before opening wine at my table

(Image removed from quote.)

I do as well for that very reason. Sure, screwdrivers are attractive to pry with (and work well for stuff like removing staples, stuck doors and other light stuff), but when you get into stuff like prying open paint cans and removing nails, pry bars are better. I can't say I have an older Scout knife that doesn't have side-to-side play on the pin where the screwdriver/bottle opener is located, and that's due to the orignal owners prying with them. One was in such bad shape, the entire handle (bolster and liner) would slip off the pin.  The County Comm 4" TI is my personal one. I've even hammered on that thing to remove nails, and it hasn't destructed (Mushroomed as expected though, but not as bad as steel)
