Project Idea, Need Help
on: November 11, 2018, 05:05:39 AM
I have a UTG Multi-functional Tactical Messenger Bag which is virtually identical, but cheaper, to the Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack. I am thinking of turning a ...

 ...into a 24oz. storage container(a.k.a. survival kit, don't tear open until needed). I can come up with all the ideas in the world, but the reality is that I live in an apartment, so I do not have a garage or shed that is turned into a work area with all the tools, gizmos and gadgets. Is there a way to open the can right under the outer lip of the can, fill it with goodies, and then reseal it so that it just looks like a can. All of which needs to be done within my limitations of space, gear and knowledge of welding aluminum. Yes, I could use, and probably will, some super glue (super adhesive) to seal it back up. I just don't know if something like that would work as the area available to 'glue' would be so very tiny. Any feedback would be great. If you are stealing my idea and create your own, then I only ask for a 'small pitance' royalty fee of 99.9%.

I know they make exactly what I am talking about in a 12oz. variety for regular sodas and in the 15oz variety for a Monster drink.

:dunno: Damn, I really do have too much time on my hands this weekend. It might be cheaper in the long run to just buy one that is already made, but thought I'd throw the idea out.

You can very lightly score the tin under the top edge, keep turning and scoring all the time and the top will almost fall off
Use a Stanley or craft knife  :tu:

Glue it back on with some epoxy?
Not a lot of surface area for glue

:2tu: I like the scoring as it is being turned idea. I will have to let you know how well that works and if some epoxy will hold. Note to self: Get some epoxy! Thanks for the feedback.

I made some little alcohol burners with coke cans so I've cut them open before
Very very light scoring imaging you are drawing a line on the can with a sharpie and lots of turns  ;)
What you are left with is quite flimsy and sharp  :ahhh

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out

Ideally you'd need to glue a flange to the can or the top before assembling these. Not sure the seam would hold otherwise...

Just another idea how about using a deodorant can instead of a drinks can? not big enough?
You might be able to use the top as a removable lid?

One of these things

Yep, that work great! Thanks. I will get around to the epoxy part after putting the kit together and buying some epoxy.

Doing some online shopping I found this Gorilla Epoxy I've used JB Weld before, but don't think it will work (not clear) and the dispensing of mixtures would just be a mess and tough for the very small rim area that it needs to be applied to. Has anyone used Gorilla Epoxy before that can provide some feedback. Yea/Nea/Something else maybe?

Or just get one of those metal flask and put all the stuff in. It will fly under the radar just as well. You can also use the flask for it's intended purpose once you remove the contents.  :D

Why not keep it super simple and use clear packing tape?  Some of that tape is really strong and when you need to open the can you are not dealing with epoxy that could make it really hard to access the goodies inside.   :dunno:

Maybe you can glue in a flat ring on the inside (made from the same material) that overlaps the two halves? That would give you a lot more surface area for the glue/epoxy.
A bit hard to explain :)
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

I filled in the grove of the outer edge of the cap section with some Loctite Super Glue (ULTRAGEL) and got the cap back onto the can. I let that sit for a couple hours and then went around the outside, bottom side of the top ring of the whole can. The glue can be seen, but I seriously doubt that a casual or even serious look will notice without holding the can and inspecting it. I will let that 'set' for at least 24hr before I fill the can (80%) with water and then glue the cap in place. Then wait another 24 hr before turning it upside down in the sink to check to see if it holds water overnight. If it passes that, then I will shake the can as if it was a new can of spray paint to see how well it holds.
