Only in a Jeep.....
on: November 19, 2018, 09:45:31 PM
I’ve been driving a Jeep for 35 years now, not the same one of course.  1st a 1980 CJ-5, then a 99 downsize Cherokee (keeping the CJ-5 for the hardcore stuff), then a 2003 Tombraider Rubicon (stolen right out of the parking lot at work in the middle of the day) and currently a 2006 Rubicon Unlimited.  Can’t seem to be without one.

I have a Jeep knife and machete, Chinese made, (for hacking thru the deep, dark jungle here in Arizona) but I always wanted a Jeep branded Swiss Army knife but unable to find one......until now.  Forest Green Recruit.....liking this one.  Anybody else do the Jeep thing or have a Jeep SAK?

Cool knife.  it would be nice to find more of an "outdoors" model like a Camper, Huntsman or Ranger, but I guess you gotta take what you can get!!

No Jeep knives here, but I do the Jeep thing.  This is the only Jeep I've owned--it's been all Broncos until this XJ 10 years ago or so.  I still have my '67 Bronco.

Love those early Broncos.......if I couldn’t have a Jeep, that would be the one.

This was my baby for a long time......sold it to a friend for his son but it ended up getting a cracked fuel line and burned up........😢.

Couldn’t be picky about the Jeep branded SAK, only one I have been able to find.

That is a real beauty!  There was a first generation Bronco rally here last summer..  I hadn't seen that many together in decades!  You sporting the 289 in that beauty?

Nice looking Bronco! I'm curious to see how the new ones will look in person compared to the concept drawings..

Nice Bronco, there was always a friendly competition between the Jeep drivers and Bronco drivers on a 4X4 run.

No tears for the CJ, they took the power train (axles, trannie and trasfer case) and put them under another CJ-5.  Locked front and back, full floating axles front and back, locking hubs on all 4 corners, granny low T-18 out of a Ford truck, 4.56:1 gears.....there is still part of my CJ out there going strong.  I’m just not driving it......

Nice SAK, nice Jeeps.
You don't really see them very often here in the Netherlands. Because of the gas prices, car and road taxes, narrow roads, tiny parking spaces and general fondness of small, underpowered econo-boxes
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

Thanks!  Yeah, it's a 289 w/3-spd Tremec converted from column shift to a Hurst floor shifter.  The drivetrain is all original except for a Unilite distributor.

Nice looking Bronco! I'm curious to see how the new ones will look in person compared to the concept drawings..

I'm not all too hopeful from what I've seen so far, unfortunately.

And ironically, the same color as my own pile of junk 1969 Kaiser Jeep CJ-5 (hasn't run in years, intended to have been used for parts by Dad, never was, got dumped on my grandparents property (his wife tried to turn it into a chicken house, which was part of the reason it ended up over here--that resulted in 2 hours of work for me dumping out the straw, and a few wasp stings), I claimed it, the gold digging mental case of a wife he married claims its his, my great-uncle's widow says she has the title, with my great-uncle's name on it, and can't find said title but will give it to me when found so let's just say that's a mess right now). It also has a Kelly Bonanza II cab on it--that's rare. I've only seen maybe 4? of them.  Now if only I can get my neighbor to sell his nearly identical CJ-5 (which has a solid rust and repair free body), I think I might have something nice here, especially with the cab and V-6 engine that are on the parts Jeep.

You see a ton of Land Rover ones, but few Jeep ones. Given there's been several Chrysler related SAKs of the same vintage, I'm not surprised there is a Jeep one.

Thanks. I love my TJ but it's been sitting and rotting for a while now.  Since I am likely to have yo do some serious frame and body work on it anyway I am very tempted to get a Brute kit instead of restoring it as is.

I think that would be an awesome thing to do to it.

Love that SAK, I suspect that’s not an easy one to find...... :tu:

My CJ didn’t look as nice as it did originally either but it spent 20 years hard core 4-wheeling in the rocks, twice on parts of the Jeep other than the tires 😳. 1st time I just put it on its side, 2nd time over backwards and then 3 times side to side before coming to a rest upright.  Not a scratch on me, can’t say as much for the Jeep.  Few dent pulls and such and it continued on.

You need to restore your TJ and get it going, that’s a nice looking Jeep.

This is pretty similar to what I have in mind:

As for the knife, there were dozens of them on eBay when I got mine, although I couldn't honestly tell you where they came from, who did them, or whether any would be left or not.

It does indeed- some cutting and welding on the frame is needed, but since I will need frame work anyway, I might as well.  The other interesting factoid is that the LJ (longer wheelbase version of the TJ) with the 4.0L and 5 speed manual has a towing capacity of 3500lbs, while the standard version is limited to 2000 because of the extra length.  The LJ is 13 inches longer than a standard TJ, so my guess is that this kit would also increase the towing capacity to that as I think it extends the wheelbase about the same amount.

Of course, I am also thinking of a new engine as well, maybe a small block Chevy V8 since that seems to be the most common conversion, and that should give it more than enough power to haul 3500lbs comfortably.

Thanks Grant!  I didn't realize there was a paddling thread, so I will certainly check it out.

Actually not that bad.  There are several good parts houses in the US, mostly in the NE states.  You can always buy parts from the UK too.  What you can't do, however, is roll down to the neighborhood NAPA store and pick up this or that...  It just takes a little planning.

Is that like a 1966???

Hey Ray.  It's a 1964 actually.  But like most old Land Rovers it has parts on it from a couple other Rovers.  When I took it off the road to restore it 10  years ago, I had a 1972 parts car that I cannibalized for some parts that were NLA new.

Thanks Barry!  It's a lot of fun, that's for sure.  That picture was taken several years ago on a paddling trip in northern Michigan.  Here's a more recent picture of it; I've been rolling with the roof off of it lately.
