Anyone else banned from Candlepower for no reason?
on: November 20, 2018, 10:05:30 PM
I signed up at the Candlepower forum to ask some questions about my atomic beam, and compare it to some dirt cheap crappy lights I got from Amazon. I also asked a question about upgrading my 4-cell Maglite inexpensively. The first three posts are moderated, and I made those posts and also a post introducing myself. At least the post about my Atomic Beam was approved, and then I went back to check and I was perma-banned with no explanation given.  ???

Not sure what's up there. Has anyone else had similar trouble trying to register at the Candlepower forums?

Charles.

Ha ha ha, you got banned from Candlepower Forums!!!

From what you've said, sounds like they've been extremely uptight, unhelpful and unwelcoming to me... not to mention unfriendly. Stay here, it's much better anyway... and safer.  :tu:

Psst, budgetlightforum is friendlier than Candlepower, in my experience. And they talk more about budget lights, as the name implies.  ;)

Of course, MTO is the friendliest of them all!  No reason to post your question here as well. :pok: ;)
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Years ago there was a pioneering media speSmurfpillst named Marshall McLuhan who told his students that the message wasn't more or less important than the medium, but that the medium was the message.

This leads me to often wonder, what is he reason people stay on a forum?  Is it the subject matter (which would be the obvious choice) or, is it the forum itself that keeps people coming back and they start doing silly things like hoarding pliers as a result?

But, I am sure there are a number of people that go to other forums after not appreciating this place for what it is, so, to each their own.  Live and let live I say.  :D

I started hoarding MTs before joining MT.o.
Started accumulating MTs and MT.o just helped me realize I was wasting money on the $10 MTs. Now I buy good (maybe not expensive, but ones that aren't crap) tools, but just less of them than when I was buying junk. Definitely better off with the wisdom of fellow MT.o members. And now, after some time learning, I like to think my observations and comparison threads will help others who are buying junk like I was doing.

I don't care for 500Lm flashlights, so I buy cheap ones. Well, kind of cheap, since most of my EDC lights are Maglites. I appreciate a good quality light and a good deal on them. :)

It is strange they banned you, Charles. Perhaps they have had major issues with employees of Atomic beam spamming the site and assumed you were one of them?
Atomic Beam is kind of shameless in their promotions.   :ahhh

I’ve heard that forum can be a bit less tolerant but have only stalked their forum never joined so I don’t have a strong opinion. Real wealth of knowledge there though.

It would be a shame if this was some sort of elitism, I’m all for detaching yourself from toxic people but sometimes a varied group and some polite conflict makes for a stronger whole.

I got banned recently from a bushcraft forum. Everything was fine for about 4 months. I posted about something and another member told me I was wrong about it. I posted the proof of what I said and asked him not to reply if he doesn't know for sure. Hey, how was I supposed to know one of the mods was his brother. I was banned for arguing with another member.  ::)  :tu:

This forum is a breath of fresh air after many!

Anyone here ever hang around BladeForums?  Their moderation is draconian even relative to how nuts much of the membership is.  :D I was one of those who went overboard the sinking ship of EDCForums when a moderator punched a huge hole in the side of the ship and dared anyone to complain (banned anything but pure gear talk and went through the personal threads of the most popular members deleting years worth of content). The survivors of that shipwreck made their own private forum which pretty much self destructed because they thought everyone was friendly enough to allow politics and religion on the forum.  :ahhh

As far as I can remember I've only ever been banned from a basketball game after tackling some dude into a wall.

In my defense they didn't really explain the rules - in retrospect I should have asked before starting. Explains his surprised expression and how easy he was to hit I guess...

Charles.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

I was a regular at CPF for a while, but the heavy-handed "we know better" moderation made it a place I wanted to be part of less and less, to the point where I haven't been there for ages.

MTo was a welcome change  :tu:

I used to check CPF and BLF regularly, but I ended up buying something every time most time I visited.....

I now check them once every few months, and still end up buying something - the BLF special editions usually.

I think CPF was OK, but a bit strict and BLF was wayyyyy too loose, with people posting whatever rubbish they liked.
It has improved I think. At a time it only had 1 moderator…

We have had some experience with some overzealous spammers as well, which is why we added their websites to the censor.  If anyone is part of other forums with this problem, feel free to share this option with them as it's really quite effective.  Whenever you type something here about SPAMCORP.com here it looks like... well... that!  The link, by the way, is a link to a thread explaining all of this, but the gist of it is that these spammers were offering members free stuff if the member would post a link and write a review.  That way the spammer would get members to do their dirty work.

We decided to turn the tables on them, and I encouraged members to get as much free stuff as they could until one dumbass decided to ruin it for everyone by tipping them off.

Too bad, I was enjoying scamming the scammers.  I can't help but feel that if more people did that, there would be less scammers out there.

Seems a bit off just outright banning you with no explanation  :dunno:

Maybe even with all the lumens available there's still no light at the end of the candlepower tunnel

Anyway just post on the MTO flashlight section, it's getting brighter all the time :tu:

I got into flashlights because a member here (no names but it was AimlessWanderer) sent me a Thrunite ti2... And so it began :ahhh

I used to be a regular on this forum, but hardly post here anymore.

Sometimes when I post a question, I get jumped on by the mods for not searching the forum as the question has been asked before.

Yet, there seemed to be other members that did the same and everything was ok, mods never said a thing to them.
