Incandescent Maglites
on: November 27, 2018, 11:27:03 AM
I'm still happily using (albeit not very frequently I admit) my incandescent Maglites so here they are - a 2AA and 3D. I have wondered about doing an LED upgrade since I got the Fenix which easily outshines them now (there we go, another pun !). But for now they work and I'm content to stay old skool.

Given the enthusiasm for Fliahlights round here I think there's good reason for someone to create a set of Flashlight Collector badges much like there is for Watches, Alox etc etc

But as I haven't found those yet I'm going to go for the obvious Flashlight badge. So here we are with my White Huntsman.

My big 3 cell D mag light remains stock. I find it works well when poking around in the yard at night for skunks.

But I have converted a 2 cell AA mag light to LED. I like it. Seems like I get more light with longer life. Those LED's are really efficient.

I assume the big reflector inside is the reason for that?

Nice to be able to focus the light.

Thank you Steve.

That's quite a comparison there  Nix and is really illuminating (Yay ! another pun !) about the difference between incandescent and LED.

Here's a better---'more illuminating'--example:

Top: Mini Maglite LED. Center: Mini Maglite incandescent. Bottom: Mini Maglite with LED conversion.

Interesting the the Mini Maglite LED is so much larger then the standard. All are 2 AA cell models.

Same order as above, but lights out:

The convention has three (3) led bulbs, the Mini Maglite LED has just one. But a bright one, it is.

At my job, I don't usually need big lumens and an incandescent Maglite still works well. I do carry an LED 2xAAA model now, but I carried the same 2xAAA 1988 Maglite from my teen years until I was 30yo. They are easy to fix and maintain too.  :)
Unlike most modern torches, you don't have to send then off or throw them away if they stop working. My 1980s 2xAA is now enjoying a second life as a tail-switched LED converted Mag like Nix's.
My 2xC cell is also LED converted. :)
The 2xAA LED conversion Maglite is also black, so the tail switch module looks great on it.

Nice Mags, y'all! :like:

Congrats on the badge :tu: and I am a maglite fan as well  I converted both my 3D mags to LED many years ago and they have a much better battery life plus being brighter :like: I converted the 2AA as well with the LED and push  button tail cap but sadly it died on me a few years ago :-\ I also have LED and regular Solitaires as well  :tu:

LED Solitaires are excellent, as Poncho wrote. 45 Lumens and dependable for less than $10. :)

Thank you all, I've learnt a lot from this discussion. There's still much to be said for the Maglite even with the impressive array of competition.

They have been slow to compete for a long time,  but they know there is a need for simple flashlights/torches. At my job, I just need a beam that can be focused, so clicking through modes would be more frustrating than useful. Short twist on/to my focus is easier for me. I have about 30 lights, but always find myself falling back to EDC'ing Maglites. They are thinner than most of their competition as well. I don't like some lithium lights for that reason. I hate to admit this, but I hold my 2xAAA Maglites in my mouth sometimes, and the thinner/lighter the better. I use non-alkaline batteries to save weight as well.
Every six months or so I use o-ring grease to lube the head and cap gaskets. If they start to flicker, I spray contact cleaner onto the light contacts and controller. Simple, effective, and cheap. :)
