Pliers which stretch, not squeeze
on: November 27, 2018, 09:21:25 PM
These two tools are useful for prying things apart.  First is the spring-loaded Proto 250G lock ring pliers.  It was designed to spread lock rings open, but can be used in other applications.

The second tool is the StrongHandTools Expand-O-Pliers http://stronghandtools.com/stronghandtools/products/pliers/expand-o-pliers/ .  They are available in 6-1/2 and 10 inch sizes.  The jaws spread open when you squeeze the handles.  The compound leverage design permits you to apply 500 lb or 900 lb of force, depending on the model.

I have the smaller size version, shown below.

That welding expander is an interesting one. I've typically used lazy machinist jacks (long nut and bolt) or reversed sliding arm or cantilever clamps for expanding needs. I'll have an eye out for that one.

Worth every penny. I used one set of these for four years before I needed to replace them. I could spread any size/strength split link chain for hanging chandeliers. I keep a set in my work bag and home toolbox.

A set can be ground down a bit for splitting other things.  :)

Plierench has a jaw that can be inserted backwards to work as a spreader.
