I may be wrong but it almost looks like a Pear tree  perhaps a wild pear  Have you thrown any fruit out in that area this year

I was able to identify a small tree in my garden with it :tu:

It resembles my fire bush in my side landscaping, of course mine is much taller and requires trimming a few times each summer.  It has small red berries when it matures, birds eat, and drop the seeds where ever they wish   and those seeds do not take much care to sprout.

The foilage will turn a bright red in the fall, my named the fire bush.  Presently mine is now bear
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I don't know it's name, but I think it cut me off in traffic once.

That's probably dogwood, and that little guy is probably dogwood too. The branches match, and the characteristic wavy sides of the leaves.
Cornus sericea - Red-Osier Dogwood

That's a N.American native species though. Maybe it's that, or another similar looking one.

From the new growth my guess is:

Cinnamomum camphora

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinnamomum_camphora

If it is, you should be able to identify it by crushing a leaf and smelling.....

There's a lane of these trees at the one entrance of the Kirstenbosch gardens, giants, and they amaze me.....

I tried my heart out to bonsai a specimen, possible but not a great candidate.

I think red osier dogwood comes closest:

I'll go again tomorrow and take closer pictures, maybe even from the inside of the fence, but I hope nobody calls the cops on me (it's not in my garden).
I'll also crush a leaf and smell it, maybe that holds the secret.

If there is someone to call the cops on you couldn't you just ask them what this thing is? In my experience gardeners are hard to shut up once you get them started on anything garden related.  :D

Ps: If it is a ficus as someone suggested I thing it should have white gummy sap. Although I thing the leaves of those don't have vascular leaves but smooth ones. But don't trust me on plant related matters.

Take a close look at your first and last photos posted, mystery plant's new growth is reddish but goes green later, while the Dogwood is more red.  Also, mystery plant has smooth leaves while in the last photo the leaves appear more textured.

Look forward to hearing the results!

Try red tip Photinia.  It is a common landscape plant in the U.S.

I first Id'd my bush as a fire bush, when in fact it is a burning bush.

Here is a link to more details of the variety, https://hvp.osu.edu/pocketgardener/source/description/eu_latus.html

It is native of Asia and used for landscaping here in the states and even possible in the land of Oz.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

There's an easier way to find out. Just eat a couple of the leaves.

Then, at the hospital, pay attention when the doctor says "You must be really stupid to eat the leaves of a <mistery tree>..."

I´ll keep it short then. Pretty sure the OP is not a dogwood variety.

Some new close-ups, just in case.
In the second pic, you can see the branch: half red, half green.

I was pretty sure since I'd grown one.  The Google search surprised me, over here they're not a problem.

The examples in Kirstenbosh are truly stunning....tree giants.
