30 day minimal throwback
on: December 01, 2018, 07:55:58 PM
Hi folks,

I changed my mind regarding my BSA/Pioneer attempt for December. Where is the fun when no Badges can be gained?

To make things funny and challenging I will try to carry only two layered out-of-production SAKs for December.

Today I will start with my 1959 Wengerinox, which is my Avatar-Knife, too.
Was on a sort of christmas party with my climbing buddies, and noticed the first drawback: no bottle opener on this knife.  :twak:
It did the food cutting duties par excellence, but how does a soldier survive without caplifter?

See you tomorrow and wish me luck.

Day 2.

First Advent. Threw it back as far as I can, and carried a Victoria Soldier Model 1908 I guess. Flawless fiber scales, WK stamp, but no year marked on the blade.

Been out for some time this morning to do some duties on our climbing grags in the river valley.

Did some hardcore testing on the blade as you see.
Just kidding, there are beavers at the river.

Only light cutting duties, zipties and stuff. The knife handled it well. Will kill some oranges later.

See you tomorrow.

Day 3.

Blue Monday. Not really blue since I have to work but it should be.
Vitamins to start the day, Wenger Evo 10 helped me with that.

Day 4.

Just arrived at work, quick snap of todays carry. Pretty minimalistic but I hope I wont miss something.  :ahhh
This lightweight carry is what I have to get used to. Almost nothing in the pocket, feels weird. The older Army Knifes are heavy and good feeling, yesterdays Wenger was featherweight. So I took something in the middle for today.

Regadring the canopener on the old Wenger/Vics (pre Alox): Those are really awkward to use. Tried to EDC the 1959 of Day1 in my Summer Vacation (4 weeks Bretagne / France) but after some attempts of opening cans I was so frustrated and switched to a Camillus Model 99 for the rest of the time. Maybe I am a bit stupid but I will never get why Victorinox didnt switch to the claw type opener earlier. So much better to use.

Day 5.

2005 Wenger SI again.

Package opening duties in the evening. :mail:
What might be inside?
A shy SI appears. After some talking it dared to show itself and revealed its inner values.
A 1986 Wenger SI.... Birth year SAK!!!  :hatsoff:

Sticky joints but overal great shape. If I manage to clean it in time it will be part of this challenge.

Day 8.

Opening a new bag of birdseed in the morning.

The challenge I started only offers a small variation in toolsets, at least with the knifes I have.
You either take a soldier, or some spartan type. No scissors. The only 2 layered knife with saw is this GAK.

Day 10.

Office duties again.
Its amazing how far you can get with the Soldier type knife. Only thing I miss is the Tweezer and Toothpick. Might carry my Tinker after this challenge again.
On weekends when I am out with my family food prep is a major thing, miss my Outrider a lot.  :dd:

Metallurgist/ process development at a steelmaker.
Actually its the Al2O3-SiO2-CaO phase diagramm, the basic steel slag diagram. (in fact, there are way more elements involved....)

Cool! Google would only take me so far - thanks
A very interesting diagram by the way! I like how you used it!

Day 11.

Very special day for me because I carry my BYSAK the first time. Cleaned, oiled and sharpened it yesterday. Love it. Still needs further cleaning of the scales, but didnt want to wait any longer.
You see so much differences to the newer ones. Thicker opener layer, non rounded tools with grind pattern, sharp bottle opener, smoother scale texture.....  Have to get a red old cross.

 :dd:

When does this stop?  :ahhh
