Possible 93mm expedition questions
on: December 02, 2018, 02:28:42 PM
Hi folks!

Some time ago I did a small mod that I called the expedition and has been my side (in my pocket) almost exclusively since I made it
Link

https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforum%2Emultitool%2Eorg%2Findex%2Ephp%3Ftopic%3D74068%2E0&share_tid=74068&share_fid=11325&share_type=t

I'm now thinking about doing it again but this time from the 93mm frame.

I have a farmer and the magnifying glas/Philip's layer

But now to my questions

1: Are the pins 3mm on the 93mm frame?
2: I need an extra blade spring from a 93mm frame?
3. Do I have to mod the magnifier or Phillips in any way to make this work?

Have a nice day!

1. Yes (the outer ones, the inner one is 2.5 mm)
2. Yes
3. Yes, you'll need to grind down the corner protrusions on the Phillips tang, but carefully. The magnifier does not need modifying at the tang but will sit high when closed, so you might want to shave off the nail nub.
Cheers!

Thanks for a quick answer!

Seems like pretty straight forward mod

 :hatsoff:

I forgot to mention you'll need an extra liner.

Also, the drilling out of the pivots should be done with care, they are much harder than the 91 mm brass ones. Use of a drill press and centre punch is advisable.

Other than that it should be a straightforward mod, yes.

Let us know how it goes

If you use the old style Philips and mag glass than you only have to drill them out.  If the mag glass sits to high for you, then you can make a recess in the spring so it sits lower.

Thanks for the tip, but if it gets done I will use the new shorter one. That's the one I have

@Simyo, I agree in principle, but I'd add a word of caution regarding the backspring. If you wanted a nice finish then you'd normally grind, but springs have been known not to like this - the heat generated apparently impinges on the heat treatment of the spring steel used, to the point that the name 'spring' steel becomes a misnomer. If anything, I'd just use a file and sanding paper, and a light touch on both.

You'll need to get the parts over a couple of hundred degrees C before you start to affect the heat treatment, so as long as you keep the parts cool you'll be fine.  Don't wear gloves - if you can pick it up with your fingers you won't be doing any harm.

Yes, but they don't function as they should during the rest of the year and now with all the Christmas mail it's even worse.. My hopes is starting to fade

Me too! Thanks mate unfortunately I don't have the dmtime to do it before Christmas but as soon the time arrives I will take the doners apart. I need access to a shop with a Pilar drill to take them apart but then I can do it at me own pace at home. Got my self an old anvil some time ago

Soo... I got my self this far.. And before I start to file down the Philips I just want to make shore which side on the spring that is right.. Does the Phillips go on the long side of the spring and the mag on the short?
Like this?

Here it is! I did take of a tiny bit to much on the Phillips and should have made the corners a bit more smooth but it will work.. And I need some more practice with my peening.. But it's working and I will use it to break it in and who knows.. I might correct something or just leave it as it is

Thanks for awl the help on this one!
