Ti gear
on: December 11, 2018, 03:47:57 AM
There is a part of me that thinks I'm not really all that excited by element 22.

Titanium? So what? I've used lots of gear made from aluminum, steel, silicone, plastics, and even wood that has performed as well as any Ti stuff. So titanium just doesn't excite me.

But I was putting some gear in a small bag this evening, in anticipation of a moderate walk tomorrow, and realized that most all of it had some titanium element. So maybe I do like titanium gear?

(Clockwise from top: LM Charge TTi, Vargo Spork, CRK Umnumzaan, Snowpeak double-walled Ti mug, Syph007 Compacter)

With a gear set up like this, I thought it was time to put in for my titanium gear badge; but I'm curious, anyone else have a sneaking suspicion that titanium gear is a bit overrated?

If I'm going 'ultra light', I just use a single wall mug....yeah, that one is Ti, too.

But when the journey is less demanding and there might be a chance to savor a hot beverage for a while, the double wall gets the nod.

Worst comes to worst, I can cram instant ramen into the double-wall mug, add boiling water, and then eat after the mess softens up. And while it's still warm.   :-\

When I'm camping, 90% of the time I take tea with me.

I just find tea easier to prepare and drink, especially without milk. Instant coffee is fine, but I like adding some sort of dairy product (dried or condensed) to instant coffee.

So, to answer your question, tea, yes. Maybe especially, yes.

Congratrs on the badge.  I like Ti but I would say its over hyped  well, Ti is pretty neat so I'm not sure what I'd say  :dunno:.  It has some fantastic characteristics that seem to demand a premium for it thats for sure.

I have Charge TTi and Ti Spork.  I've also got 2 Ti lights.  Being the 9th most abundant element on earth you'd think that'd be reflected somehow in the cost.   It occurs naturally in our bodies which is pretty neat.  Ti is very corrosive resistant which I think is great.

Nice ti gear!  :like:

I like ti, but it's probably over hyped (or at least over priced) forost edc gear applications, IMO.

I do like that it feels warmer to the touch when you first pick it up, and I like the weight savings over steel.

The only ti piece I currently have (I think ) is my Momentum Atlas watch. I like light weight watches, and can't stand plastic, so the titanium is beneficial to me on this case. I really like it.
