The ol' Victorinox Spirit scissors mod - with pics
on: December 16, 2018, 12:12:54 PM
The Victorinox Spirit's scissors are often getting moaned about about their limited opening.
After around 2 month of using it I decided to fix that... as often described here and elsewhere.
However, I couldn't find a convenient enough explanation of how to "un-hook" the spring to get access to the nob to shorten it.

I'd like to share that here now with my own pics.
Please excuse if this was posted before  :dunno:

Step 1. Carefully push something slim/flat between the scissors arm (I had to use a pin to start it off with) and the spring to lift up the spring, and turn the other half of the scissor until it's free.

Step 2. Carefully shorten the limiter nob thingy...

Step 3. With any luck it looks like this afterwards...

If you want to do this please be careful not to grind away too much.
I don't think it's bad if you do but I think it's not as nice to use if it would open too wide.

Greets,

Matt

Now all you gotta do is to move the rivet down a bit to give a longer cut   :o    :D

I carried out this mod today. It improved the usability of my scissors tremendously. My scissors opening nearly doubled from 6mm to 11.5mm after the mod. Thank you so much Matt for sharing this great idea. :like:

I wish I had the courage to do this mod. Sadly I'm a perfectionist lol. What tools did you all use?

I just did that mod last week. Used a dremel with one of the grinding wheels it came with, and a diamond file to smooth it after. It was pretty easy. Just make sure you mark what you want to take off, and go about it slowly. Good luck

This was an inspired but simple mod - Although much care needed to execute

And one when you think - "Why do I even need to do this?"  ???  - ie Why aren't the Spirit scissors made like this in the first place

The bigger question is why did they even bother to redesign a sub-par scissor when they can use their time proven design..

Totally agree Sam.
I did the measurements as well some time go and figured that the 91mm scissors should just fit into the Spirit. But I hesitate to take it apart for that.

Excellent mod  :like:

Aha - Well that really is the question !!!

I had always assumed that they redesigned the Spirit scissors as the regular ones did not fit!!    :pok:

In think they redesigned them for heavier use. While the regular ones are more like light to medium use. You can feel the difference when trying to cut zip ties for example. The ones on the Spirit are almost like shears.

Maybe that's their intent..but they made a left hand operated scissors instead.. Something that's not "correct" in the multitool world.. The only thing I like is they used a spring bar instead of the leave spring in all their scissors..

Why left hand operated?  I use mine right handed.

Other than the tendency of folding what ever you are cutting... Take a piece of paper, draw a long line, straight, curve, doesn't matter. Cut on the line as normal. You will know why..

I see what you are saying. It works better right handed when you rotate the tool and pull instead of push the arm. Agree that the regular style scissors are better in that.

Have you tried cutting on the line? Seriously try it.   :pok: the reversed overlapping of the blades is one thing. If you have not tried cutting on the line I talk about, you are missing the fun part..

I did. Using it while pushing the arm it cuts next to the line (using it right handed). When I turned the tool over and pulled the arm, I was able to cut along the line. Not as smooth as the regular scissors, but doable.

Yeah.. That's the "issue" for left handed scissors when used by right handers.. Usable but tricky when doing more precise cuts..
