Holiday Cheer for the Outdoors
on: December 18, 2018, 11:25:02 PM
One of my favorite things in the  outdoors is sitting around a fire with friends. I really like making my fires the old fashion way with flint and striker. I would like to sponsor a little GAW  for the holidays. Open to all members of MTo  in all countries. Just post that you love campfires and you are in. I will have a random drawing on Christmas Day. Here is a picture of the gift I am offering, A flint and steel fire starting set that include jute tinder and charcloth to aid in getting the flames going. Oh and besides the fire kit, one of the elves is slipping a little something extra into the package. Good Luck. Dan  :woohoo:

Great GAW Dan!

Not an entry, but I love using flint and steel to strike a fire, too. For a while, just to get better at it, I was lighting my grill using flint and steel...and char cloth. I think the neighbors thought I was more than a little eccentric. That char cloth is essential for me; I'd be useless without char cloth.  :tu:

Cool set!!

I love a campfire but my freshly layed lawn not so much...

So I've been striking flints to light my fireplace instead

How can anyone not love a camp fire? The warm feeling, roasting chestnuts or some chouriço, the crackling of the burning wood...

Very cool GAW, thanks for the generosity!

Great GAW. Unfortunately they are not very fond of campfires in The Netherlands…
Hope someone else will be happy with this.

Nothing like a good campfire is there? I'm in and thanks for doing this.
As a side note I started doing historical reenactments about 30 years ago portraying an American Revolution Redcoat and French and Indian war era trappers, so I learned to light a pipe using a flint and steel with a little fluff ball of jute on top of my tobacco to catch the spark.  Needless to say, those first few puffs were HARSH! Here's a pic of me in 15th century garb over a fire pit.

I'm digging' this GAW!

Alan, I don't think I've ever tried to light jute directly with a flint and steel. I have to give that a try now......

I remember when I was a kid, we had a campfire every Friday evening, these days the law doesn't like campfires...

But I still love them, and there are still a couple of places where you can have a campfire, be it in a controlled environment.

Thank you very much for this sweet giveaway mate, I would like to be in  :salute:.

Great  holiday GAW!  I too love a campfire.  I can sit and stare at the flames for hours.  I cant imagine being being more at peace with the world than those times sharing a fire with loved ones and perhaps a few spirits ;)
