Awls
on: March 23, 2019, 10:55:33 AM
Hi all,
Would someone mind posting detailed pics of all angles of awls from alox soldiers and vintage cellidor models please?
I'm wondering if I can try making some from can openers to try to fit opposite a main blade on a 91mm form factor but I don't have any to model one on and don't know fully what they look like! :dunno:

Thanks very much

From an '03:

I think you need a 'head-on' shot to see it.

I think they are a break-shape from sheetmetal stock.

By 'vintage', do you mean the pre-'61 'triangular' or conical ones?  They're thick. Measured one at 5.2mm wide.

Hi craggus2000

The awl’s shape is quite complex. The awl ‘blade’ edge would be easy to reproduce as it’s straight and a single chisel grind. My Alox Pioneers all have a taper grind in the last 3mm to give a needle point.

I think the problem you may have is the spine. While the blade thickness (at the pivot) is 1.80mm the spine rolls over making the total thickness 3.45mm. This rolled spine stays outside the scale and forms the nail nick. My opener is only 2.29mm thick so there’s not enough meat on the tool to reshape into the awl, and it’s too short. You’d have to start with a fresh billet and machine it.

Will be a fun project whatever you decide!  :tu:

The can opener uses the curved hook part to stop the tool from dropping too far down into the knife when closed.  You need to be careful not to cut too much off this bit or you won't be able to access the nail nick.
