Sam's LM Surge
on: December 29, 2018, 08:27:43 PM
Was working on a Surge a while back when I tried to get it bladeless but somewhat halted the project as I figured a ST300 or Core would be a better candidate as they are easier fill in more tools with the blades removed. MMW's recent esquires on the other thread sparked the interest again... so here you go. Not much cutting this time, just cherry picking some tools. Pretty much the handles, blades and implements came from all over the place..

What it's packing.  :)

This blade was originally a serrated blade from TTC before they "stopped operating". It's a very pretty Damascus blade with very deep etching but they know nuts about sharpening and it wouldn't cut anything. I just cut it shorter and reworked it to a plain edge sheepsfoot blade.

Scissors was from a 1st Gen Surge. The plasticky thumbpad thingy fell off which I think most do, have been repaired with a small piece of aluminium and peened into place.

Recently added B*astard file. Absolute pleasure in using it. Quite surprised that it was rather easy to cut and shape.

Internal implements mostly came from a OG SuperTool. Somehow, somewhat they work better for me. They are thicker and better designed imo. I love the long-ish drivers and they are centre axis orientated which makes driving very natural. They fit the LM bit adaptor and some standard hex bit adaptor. My handle internal is wider and have a better tolerance for 3 full thickess tools on each side.

This bit adaptor fits perfect. See how centered they are.

Took care of the handle splay as well. The standard/typical splay of a new gen surge is quite horrendous.

Again, its a project for fun. ;) and to be very honest, I have never really edc a surge before. (I pack a Core in my backpack.) Though the Surge is a real beast of a tool, the weight, size and the 2 large blades (by MT standards) hinders the EDC-ing.. I think I should now try carrying my Surge as a trial on working days.

The second I saw "Sam's LM Surge" as a title I clicked, and you did not disappoint.
It looks great. I love every modification you made. You'd think LM would at least reduce the handle splay on their tools.

Weird, I have a ST200, and the Phillips has a cylindrical head.  Why did they go from a square head in the ST to a round head in the ST200?
That square one looks really nice, not to mention the bit kit goes on it.

I tried a Ganzo bit adapter on my ST200, and it works. Well, kind of. It fits, and although it moves and rattles a little, it can be used for bits. Better than nothing, I thought the adapter would just spin around freely.

Very awesome work as always, Sam :dd: it is always a joy to see what you come up with :like: I love the idea of cutting a regular file down to fit in the Surge :o that blade is a beauty as well :dd: The Supertool implements are all great as well and it's great to see a bit adapter for it as well 8) :like:

Thanks peeps!

The philips is cylindrical too. I just filed down the side to fit and clear the the long flathead by its side. The bit adaptor fits the long flathead and philips diagonally. (Make sense? ) it's a better fit on the flathead than on the philips.

The file is definitely handy and removes material fast.

@RP, my brain is empty most of the time.. It will be boring..  :D those cheap bit adaptors comes in many sizes. Some fits some do not. Sometimes I buy those cheap tools just for them. Then I would see which fits and label them.

Thanks CallsignBadger!  :hatsoff:

Some details shots.

Steve, I dremel a little off the back end of the pliers. I dun want to do it on the handle end as I see that area to be a weak spot. Wouldn't want to further weaken it.

Weight aside, handling close to a regular wave.

Its been almost a year since the last update.. time files!!

Upgraded main blade to D2  ;) Looks like a big hotspot, but tested and does not affect any function. Other than increased chance of giving a giant pinch.

:hatsoff: yes.. On the trusty bench grinder. But do note that when blunting a butterfly MT, many times the pliers head will get caught on the implements inside. Something to think about and maybe will need to rearrange them.

(Image removed from quote.)
How much did you take off Sam? I will be doing mine with a file so I will need to disassemble it to work on it and periodically reassemble to check, which is a pain but I don't want to overdo it and have the tools touching when the pliers are squeezed.

That blade is impressive!  :like:

:hatsoff: I think how much to take off is quite subjective... Most have some variation is handle splay... But I notice the newer one have more off them.. Lots of trial and error..
