First, my apologies for the long thread. Took me a while just to sign up...and then I had far too many crazy ideas about making a huge introduction post. I found myself wanting to join the new Swisschamp Challenge...so I guess it had to be today!

Second, thanks to all the members who post such valuable information for all to use and learn from. Part of my posting today is about being able to help give back to this community by sharing some of what I've learned too. While I might be inclined to thank only those who provide answers, I also recognize that many of those answers wouldn't have been posted if not for the excellent and difficult questions asked.

I got my first Vic in the summer of '84 and I've been hooked ever since. That knife is a black Champion that my best friend gave me. It's certainly gotten me out of and occasionally into trouble over the years, is by far my favorite knife, and still in the EDC/in-service rotation. I'm just glad it's never fallen victim to TSA confiscation despite going everywhere with me.

Repaired one of it's scales back in 2016 with CA glue:

I have a Hoffritz problem/addiction. This was the start:

There are 2 versions of the stainless scale inlay 'v1' on the left:

Best guess is c. 1980 for the change

I like Craftsman variants and want to fill in most of running changes in my collection, but I still have big gaps to fill.
This is my earliest:

also have one (Master) Craftsman c.1972 with the lack of can key:

I like Rangers (and campers, and picnickers, and outdoorsmen) and have some dating info for the Camping Inlay dating thread.

Rangers are great dating tools since they have all the backside tools, have been in production for a long time, and do not have the cost of Champions/Champs

My first mod:

I like buying knives to repair:
Open heart surgery to replace a broken clip point

I like buying crap..and apparently taking them apart:

Time consuming, but I like fabricating replacement parts:

Dang, I better wrap this up...it's too long already!  I'll add more pics in later posts. I also like:
Polished liners/spacers. Orange scales. Troubleshooters. 2.5mm pliers. Tinkers. Special inlays. Compacts, Explorers and Spartan Lites for mod fodder. Pruner blades.

Life is much better with 2.2mm brass rod in stock. Re-using pins and turning down 2.5mm or 3/32 stock sucks!  :ahhh

I've never bought a new knife for myself. NOS and unused, yes, but never a new one from a retailer.

I only have one alox...a pruner. Two if I count a money clip.

I don't like being organized. My collection is like this post. All over the place!  :o

Ack! That's just TMI.

Anyway...I'm looking forward to being part of the MTO/SAK Forum in 2019!

------------

Finally, I'd like to apply for my SAK Banner. I'll repeat my oath in the SAK Banner thread, but I thought it appropriate to say the words first here.  I also figured owning this knife wouldn't make me an automatic shoe-in...

I, kamakiri, being of relatively sound mind and aging body, hereby entreat the gracious MTO powers that be to consider me for membership in good standing in the Swiss Army Knights and promise to place no knife before my trusty Black '84 Champion till rust do us part.

 ;)

Awesome 1st post, and I agree with Jaya man, I like that bail restoration. :tu: I'd be interested in more details on how you did it.

Thanks! I'll try my best to explain.

The project started with the thought, "How would I make a bail/shackle for a custom resto-mod that's the width of a SwissChamp..."
The hardest part was the math...estimating the length needed on-center eye to eye for the correct look installed. A paper or card stock template to mock-up helped.
Once that was figured, estimating how to control finish length through the various forming steps was next.

I started with a 3/32 wire and it didn't seem like enough material to achieve the workable width and thickness after flattening a couple of ends. So I started with 2.5mm and decided to deal with the material removal needed on the center section instead of hammering which would change the length.

The shaping of the ends turned out to be the relatively easy part.

Flatten and form one end to have enough width and thickness for the final eyelet. Excess was left on the end to handle with pliers.

File details. Sure, that sounds easy, but NS is pretty soft and I only used 3 jewelers files. A half round taper, a small diameter round and a flat.

Half round did most of the work at the 'neck' and around the eyelet and the flat did the visible 'step' and the back details/step. Small round to work the drilled eyelet final size and bevel.

Drilling the eyelet:

Open/locate hole with round file:

clip excess and taper eyelet:

Shape and reduce outer edge to match:

Work the other end and control the eye to eye length:

Finish the center section to match and bend to final shape before installation.

Hope that helps!
