Thanks, Wspeed! I always put more effort with builds that may be permanent. And get even pickier with restorations. I left one of the pins about 0.12 mm longer than I wanted and would have taken it off for a restoration, but okay for a user like this.

I said I buy crap...sometimes it's not intentional.

Small blade in the listing only mentioned 'light scratches' and said nothing about the very pronounced BENT TIP  ::)

Still too visible from the blade side:


Good enough to leave for now. At least it sits nowhere near the main blade now.


Rest of the knife and the edge on this blade was great so I didn't want to bother with a return or refund or pulling it apart to replace the blade. I have enough of those to do that I knew about when purchasing.  ::)

Just glad I didn't have any errant blows and ruin the factory edge. Still cuts nicely and separates news print just fine.

Yeah, not too bad and I've fixed worse but with some degradation of the cosmetics.  I'm more concerned with not marring the edge or sides on this one.  Making it straight might come at the expense of some surface dimpling.  I always try for the 'right' fix for the given condition.

A friend of ours gave me some active starter so I thought I'd give it a go and use it in my pizza dough and make some sourdough loaves.



SAK-wise I've been going through and cleaning/repairing recent arrivals. Mostly busy work and light repairs. Started pulling apart some of the donors for my next project, but have only started 2 (SwissChamps) of the 5 or 6 it needs. Might get more done later today. Gonna be a little slow on the prep for this one. I want the polish to 'match' on parts from different eras. Gonna be a bit of work if I choose an unpolished/machine finish pruner blade. And since so many spacers and liners will be loose I need to cherry pick though the parts after some cleaning. Doesn't help that I'm still mulling over the tools to include.

Sounds less fun the more I type!  :D

Nice addition, Matt!  :tu: I always include the mini SD when possible. 

Is there still stuff coming out of the joints between the tools and liners/springs?  I only used oil (Vic MTO) to clean it so I wouldn't risk damaging/melting original scales with alcohol.

I only used the starter (no commercial yeast added) for the pizza dough too...so while it's quick on the prep time, it's still taking a while to rise. I normally do refrigerated proofing for my pizza dough over 3-5 days, but I was inclined to leave these out for a few hours this morning just to give them a faster start.  I'll probably bake those Friday.  Gonna attempt the bread loaf tomorrow if I don't forget a feeding for the starter.

I've got all the "stuff" out as it seems. There wasn't much left, just a bit  :salute:
I'm using Ballistol.

I had the scissors grinding at the backspring suddenly. I worked that away carefully with lots of open-close actions, oil and cleaning after every 5 cycles or so.

It's all good, I love it  :hatsoff:

That's interesting about the scissor spring. I didn't notice anything visually or in operation.  Vic MTO is pretty thick and could mask contact surface roughness. If the Ballistol lube component is on the thin side, it might not like the shearing action.


Must be nice to have your wife make it. Mine prefers simpler projects like soda bread.  Pleased with my first attempt!

Just want to make sure, don't mean the tiny spring on the scissors. I mean the spring for the tool itself. I think it's called backspring?
It was working smoothly initially, so it's a bit weird it did develop that suddenly. Maybe some "stuff" that came loose and got caught under it  :dunno:

I remember noting how clean those surfaces were even from the first pics.



I'm thinking that either something worked loose or the Ballistol is more solvent than lubricant. The stuff that came out was like tar or varnish and didn't seem to be carrying dirt or grit as it came out.  The large scissor spring puts on a fair amount of compression and will gall surfaces quickly without adequate lubrication. Including light oil like 3 in 1.  When I clean with alcohol or put a new mod together, I lube liberally with Vic MTO at the backspring contact and the top so that the liners are lubricated too. I learned what that grinding noise is the hard way.  :(

I'm using Ballistol since the early '80s and trust it.
It is slightly alkalic though, but never had a problem with it on my SAKs and MTs  :think:
I always oil the liner areas too as you said.

I had a very very slight grinding problem on the other '80s Traveller on 3 implements but they were unused and not as highly polished as they are these days. It quickly went away.

Never any of those problems on newer SAKs.

No worries Grant, it's got better already and snaps open and close with no grinding. Just not super slick.
