Question is, what took you soo long kamakiri? :pok:

Just kidding... awesome detailed explanation on the bail mod... :like:
The explanation is weirder when I say it out loud...I was inclined to post over several topics since back in maybe 2016...but I thought it a little rude to barge into the community without at least a simple intro. Seemed even more rude as time passed since I've read lots of posts from most almost everybody...even from this thread! I even thought it a bit weird to want to donate to the site because I felt I personally gained from it...when I haven't even made a peep.  Fixed both of those things yesterday...and also make the kick-off donation for 2019 in the amount of $20.19. Maybe a little cheesy...but hey, why not? The shoe fits...

Maybe a little like being a fly on the wall for years...and only taking human form now?  :dunno:

Can we ask you to make a separate thread on the bail reproduction and modded SAK in the Mod Squad section?
Soitenly! I've got lots to add to existing threads that I've bookmarked and plan on starting a few where appropriate. Like dating with springs through the '70s...some awl info for @frater_martin...as well as some mag glass stuff, etc.

:MTO: Has help me spend my hobby money...now I'm doing my best to return the favor!  ;)

-----

And many thanks everyone for the best welcome I've had to *any* forum!  :salute:  :tu: It's been a perfect way to start 2019.  :D So glad to be here now!  :woohoo:

Indeed it's nice, I remember that I just unceremoniously dove in.

I found out something that may help the owner's of the old scissors on the go: If you carefully place the tweezer tip into the screw and turn the tweezer handle firmly but not too strong, and , you can tighten the screw that way without carrying any extra tools. works at least on 91mm.

Wow. Thanks for rolling out the welcome mat everyone!  :hatsoff: :salute:

So it's a pocket telescope then  :D

HA! I wish...

Got my inspiration from this magnifier I got from my Uncle when I was 10:

Hello there and... Welcome!  :salute:

Is it just me or do all your spare parts look like they have little pixie faces?

Intro Post 2a:

I said I have dating info to share.  I thought I'd start with the awls c 1971 to '87+. I smurfed up the closeups so I'll add more detail later, and/or in a separate dating thread on this subject. I'd like to credit @Frater_Martin for his excellent awl graphics and all the @jazzbass answers and @Huntsman for timeline threads for getting me to look closer at awls.  :tu:

The knives pulled for this sample pic:
1. c. '71 Champion LNF w/ file phillips and 'old' scissor small clip, etc. No +PAT
2. c. '71/'72 Master Craftsman w/ 'smooth' phillips - no can key, 'new' scissor with part polish and deep bevel machining
3. c. '73/'74 Hoffritz (Master) Craftsman with smooth+can key phillips, SS shield inaly, black scissor spring, partial deep bevel machining. Numbered scaler, small clip point. (I have one just like this non-Hoffritz and NS shield)
4. c. '76? Hoffritz Craftsman w/ SS 'Hoffritz' scale inlay No clip point, 'double thin (full) liner' protocol.Small scissor pivot screw. Numbered scaler
5. c. '77/8 sim. to #4 above but No number scaler, awl update 'thick and thin (full) liner' protocol. Large scissor pivot screw. I believe this to be a good example of discontinued part use in Hoffritz knives.
5a. MISSING. These are c. '80-'82 knives I'd likely insert a c. '80 Hoffritz with the 'Thick' shield SS inlay and v2 'Hoffritz' scale inlay.
6. '84 100th Anniversary Champion. I suspect late '83 production on these, because of non-bevel mag glass.
7. c. '86 Swiss Champ
8. '87+ Tinker Deluxe

Awl characteristics:
1. 50º machined tip w/ slight rotation. Eased/radiused outer edge. Concave back surface (raised at nail nick side)
2. 60º machined tip w/ slight rotation. Eased/radiused outer edge. 'Flat' back for all going forward.
3. 60º machined tip perpendicular. Eased/radiused outer edge.
4. 60º machined tip perpendicular. Outer edge is 90º for all going forward.
5. 70º machined tip perpendicular.
5a. No machined tip same shallow taper as all above.
6. No machined tip and taper increased.
7. Eye added. Otherwise sim to #6.
8. Taper increased and moved closer to tip past eye.

Thanks for looking!  :hatsoff: Please question/comment/criticize!  :)

EDIT:
OH, smurf it!   :ahhh Forgot one that's supposed to be between 5. and 6. Gonna call it 5a. here and move numbering in all subsequent posts/references and list 9 types that I can identify on sight with a good pic straight from the bottom. EDIT2 And 5a goes after 5!   :-[

a little dirty, but better than I was expecting and should clean up pretty well.

Hoffritz 134kmaU

aka 'small Master Craftsman' or 'Artisan'. Not that I like those names.  I don't have as many 84mm knives, but some cool ones show up when I'm looking and they're hard to pass up.

And this Hoffritz Explorer...earliest one I've ever seen. Could be '73. Clip point, black spring, eased edge awl, NS inlay. Seller's photo:

Took and offer and counter offer to get it, but I'm glad it came off the BIN asking price which I thought was unreasonable w/o a box or NIB condition.

 :woohoo: for these two.

Spent some time cleaning the 134kmaU:

before:

after 1st pass

Everything else wasn't so bad and the blades were relatively untouched. No nasty surprises at least. I'll post more when I get more of the oxidation and galvanic crud off.
