91mm SAK Gourmet Mod - Newbie questions
on: January 04, 2019, 03:21:48 PM
Hi,

I've been bemoaning the loss of the Pioneer Settler, I really wish I had known about it while it was still available new.

I thought that I could perhaps make a version of one, or at least a 91mm version, from a Spartan modded to remove the second layer, Ti scales from SwissBianco and still have the corkscrew to make a 91mm version of the SAK Gourmet.

I've never done anything like this before, it would be very much a learning process (using the very helpful 'how to' shown at the top of this section. Can anyone see reason for this not to work? Also and this might be an ignorant question, where would I get the pin stock required for the mod?

Many thanks!

Hi pomsbz... Doing a 91mm version of the Gourmet is certainly doable... your in the right direction already with The Spartan... Since your just going to eliminate the opener layer, the pins can still be reused... just be careful not to drill too much (say past the outer liner...

Just drill enough until the bushings surrounding the pins can rotate... with a nail punch, gently tap the pins out...

Once your comfortable with mods, you can try making your own pioneer settler... just get a standard pioneer... you will also need a 91mm small blade and enlarge the pivot hole to 3mm...

If you use a Spartan the pin stock will be long enough to use again Pom. Should be a really easy mod - just drill the pins on the opener layer and remove the spacers and openers. Replace the outer spacer and then you should be good to repeen it.  :salute:

Thanks folks! Again a newbie question, I assume I'll have to use the spring from the opener layer to accommodate the corkscrew. Will that work fine with the blades?

Does it have space on the back for the corkscrew? I've no idea, never opened up a SAK before. :)

Just ordered the Spartan. Man but these tools are cheap! Cost me $20 in the UK. That's a whole lot of tool for so little.

The corkscrew is already on the back of the blade spring.  I think I'm missing something?

If you take apart the Spartan, remove the can opener, and the bottle opener, the awl and the opener spring, and then swap the middle liner for the opener outer liner, you have a Gourmet.

I've never done any peening before. Can I take it that I require a peening hammer? If so what weight should I be looking for?

Hammer with a ball end is recommended.
2-8 oz range, 4 oz probably the best.

You can get away without using a Ball peen hammer but it does help
2 to 4oz and lots of little taps, try not to loose your temper with it

Small ball peen hammers are non existent here, I've got an employee visiting london soon, thought of this one. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000RO66PW

Look OK?

Oh and me, lose my temper? Never. How could you even suggest such a thing! Have you been spying on me? It's the medication I tell you!

Pomsbz,
I hesitate to give you this advice as the other guys here don't do this
But I use shims as spacers when I'm peening a knife together
They don't need to so maybe I'm being too entheusiastic

Um, shims? I wouldn't know where to start.  :)

I bought the hammer, an employee is flying to the UK on Sunday and will bring me it back. Then I have to learn how to peen. Never done it before. I bought a spare spartan from Grant's sale in case I screw this one up too badly.  :) I've given up on the Ti scales for the moment, shipping from SwissBianco Canada was too expensive and the account is hurting right now. I think I'm going to try using Nylon scales. I've only seen them in pictures but they have a certain charm that, for me at least, cellidor lacks.

Have you had a look at my old "how to" thread? https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,9808.0.html  Stuff in there you might find helpful.

Already bookmarked Sir! Without it I don't think I would have ever considered the project, thank you!

You're going to have to excuse me for being a) dense b) not mechanically minded but what are the shims achieving? I'm assuming the original build didn't require them.

They are spacers, you peen everything up, forming the heads of the pins to how you want them,
when you pull out the shims it leaves you with a little room so the knife is not too tightly put together
Then you try the blades to see if they feel right, if too loose give the pins a few more little taps

As I said the other guys on here don't use them so it might be down to my impatience   ::)

Peening hammer arrived (the one linked above) via an employee who was in the UK last week.  :)

Drilling the pins, I realise I don't need to drill much, just enough to loosen the collar. Is this something I need a drill press for or can I do it with a handheld drill (we have one in work) and what kind/size of bit should I buy?

Yes I know, I'm a newb par excellance
