Just wondering....have you gentlemen ever tied any tube fly’s? And if you have, have you increased your success rate go up vs them throwing the flies and getting away? Thoughts?

I've heard of tube flies, but never tied one.

I should though....I'll try anything!  :D

I haven't tied any myself or fished one, they were quite a craze around here for a while but don't hear much about them now  :dunno:

Thanks...I’ll be going to the fly shop today and check out what they have there. That will be a indication if you are popular or not. Hopefully I will be coming back with a new SAK.

Got a new reel to use for ice-fishing:

(Image removed from quote.)

Champ assisted while loading the spool with some hefty 10# flouro.

Going for Ling on Friday evening. We'll be out on the ice in the dark.  I've found that it's nice to set up some gear before hand, as opposed to trying to tie knots and find small pieces by flashlight, using cold fingers......

(Image removed from quote.)

Tied a few drop shots and a couple of Carolina rigs for use fishing for Ling on the bottom.   :tu:

That's a sweet reel, I've been 100% converted. Won't buy anything other than Shimano reels now.
I'm a total legend..... in my own mind- Herley

I'm slowly transitioning my spin casting lures from treble hooks to single hooks. Just seems kinder to the fish that aren't going to be kept.

As long as I'm replacing hooks, it seems like an opportunity to hide the hook and add a bit of extra movement to an otherwise clunky lure. I used the Swiss Champ's scissors to add a bit of fur to a couple of single hooks to try this concept out.

The separate single hooks might get fished as they are, or used as replacement hooks for some other treble hooks. Haven't decided quite yet.....

Well you will find out how well it works out pretty soon. I never thought of that, but I like the ideal...and the hook is at the back for the short strikes. I will be really interested in knowing how well it works for you. One of the reasons I asked about the tube flys is because the hook is at the back. The only concern I have is the lure weight being used by the fish to throw the hook...can’t wait to hear how your field test goes!  :like: :tu: :hatsoff:

A couple of summers ago I went on an old school craze, and almost exclusively used spoons and spinners, I dressed some of the hooks, and they performed well  :tu:

I'll dig some out on the weekend, they were nothing fancy though just some bucktail and a bit of tinsel

Another idea I haven't tried is to simply remove the hook and replace it with a fly of appropriate size

With the ones I posted above, I tied on some lead-free weight (0.15mm wire), then I added a little crystal flash and covered the 'lead' with dubbing. Then the fur or buck tail got added on.

They almost look like small, short streamers.

I'm curious to see what they look like in the water. Might try 'em out this weekend in the open water below the dam. (Ice fishing tomorrow night got cancelled for several reasons, not the least of which is that Mrs Nix's 2005 Jeep is acting up.)

Oh boy, the Gladiator comes out this spring/summer...
It is one of the reasons I am going back to work for 3 months - money will be going for one!  :woohoo:

Here's a shot of my Vic Fly-caster next to a Lamson Speedster:

I made the rod from a Sage DS2 5-wt blank.  I didn't follow Sage's schema for the guides, but altered them a bit, adding one more. As a result, the action is slowed down a bit and tends to be a little less aggressive or snappy. Probably not my best casting rod, but it catches fish.

That is the exact model and color I am wanting! They say next year, they will be coming out with a Hercules model, bigger, badder to compete against Ford, Toyota and the other big boys! :tu:

Rod building is one thing I have never tried. Saw a Lawson Liquid??? Today at the shop. Did get the Renzetti Traveler 2000 and some old back issues of Fly Tyer.

Oh yeah  :iagree: I would be one BIG happy camper with the Gladiator. I haven’t been this excited about any new vehicle in so long, I can’t even remember!

Sadly, fly fishing is more expensive than SAK collecting.

Not that I'm a collector. I'm not. I only buy the SAK's I need.

There's a difference.  ;)

It is! But compared to some other outdoor things, not that expensive. Shooting for example, ammo cost  the fly vice is very much like a reloader. Hummm,  they both have  recipes, you can make what you need to what you are after. You can go fishing pretty much anywhere, especially in the city. Not so much with shooting outside in the city!
Now photography cost have come way down with them finding a home on the phones! Digital cameras on phones have just about killed regular camera sales. What would we see in another 20 years!   :tu:

As promised here's a Mepps Aglia I added Bucktail to, I have some others when I can get to them, they're not fancy, but the catch rate did go up

Very nice, Greg!   :like:

I do like a Mepps, especially for still water. I've tried them in rivers, but without much luck.
