Off brand 7 day challenge - L'Electric Brevete SGDG
on: January 08, 2019, 12:45:46 AM
Had this out recently and thought it would be fun to do 7 days with it, not quite sure if it qualifies as off brand but will go for the badge anyway  :dunno:

Multitool made in France i think sometime in the 60's, very well made and in excellent condition, i don't forsee any problems carrying it and i don't expect any parts to break or fail but should be fun regardless, will endeavour to find jobs for all tools :tu:

Slightly off topic...

"Brevete S.G.D.G." = "Brevete Sans Garantie du Gouvernement", translates to "Patent without guarantee of the (French) government"

To my (limited) knowledge they stopped using that phrase in 1968, so the tool should have been made before that.

Thanks guys  :tu:
Aleph, not off topic in the slightest, thanks for the extra info, as it's older than me i best take good care of it  :tu:

Day 1

Nice easy job for it today, wire a plug

Cutters and wire stripper work fine, nothing to report but at this point i ran into problems..will come back to that

Almost there, just need to zip it up and call it job done

Now for the little issue i had, no Phillips and the flathead is too thick and wide for the little screws  :pok: , if desperate i would have just used the knife blade but a knife blade isn't a screwdriver, i resisted temptation and used another driver, no biggie

All done  :tu:

NICE, VERY NICE TOOL!!! Has aged well too. Please excuse me but, is it an heirloom? Someone had given it a very good care, as it is almost pristine! Pliers look robust. Can we see the other side; and detailed tools!?!?

Funny looking plug for a reason, as i'm sure you are aware all electric cables are filled with smoke, if there is a problem that smoke is released to let you know there's an issue, this plug not only releases twice the amount of smoke than inferior plugs it also emits a big bang and a very bright flash to grab your attention, this leaves you in no doubt you smurfed up your wiring, it's also that shape because it gathers up and attracts more electricity and the shape of it helps funnel the electrics at twice the normal speed into the appliance  :D

Not an heirloom, just one i picked up a while back in a junk shop, i think it's been dry stored in it's sheath all its life  :tu:

Sheath i think is original

Day 2

Gimlet today for a pilot hole

Any misgivings i had yesterday for the lack of Phillips and small flathead are lessened by the fact that this gimlet is a fantastic tool for boring quickly and neatly

16 half turns to get through this wood i thought was really good, 8 revolutions and two of them were to get it started, it would take longer to get and use a drill nearby than to use this, very quick, i was impressed  :tu:

I recently won an eBay auction for a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1" Tablet from UK, which came with a charger with a UK plug like that...

Luckily I have universal plug adapter from Skross  ::)

When you think about it though those plugs are a really neat design, not sure everyone elses but here wall sockets have gates in each hole to stop little fingers poking around inside, on the plug the top earth pin is longer than the other two so as you plug it in not only is earth connected first it also opens up the other two gates for the live and neutral, its wired in such a way that in the event of someone pulling the wires from the plug the earth is last to leave as its longer, each plug is also fused separately because of the way the wring system is here but you have that safeguard along with the house circuit breakers, the live and neutral pins themselves are insulated almost to the end so again if little fingers manage to pull the plug half out and stick something in the gap it wont go boom. Some appliances of course don't need an earth so in that case it's simply left unwired or it's substituted with a plastic pin, no bad thing when working with 240 that there's a bit extra safety, i think i have only been zapped a couple of times in my life so they got something right  :D

Day 4

Just a bit of fun today, making a strop from a Birch bracket :tu:

Select a suitable bracket and remove from tree

Next cut it flat and square it so its easy to hold

And that's as good as its getting from me, you could cut it thinner to glue onto a board and properly flatten it but i couldn't be arsed with that, i will just dry it and make it as flat as i can

The beauty of this Fungus is it has anti septic properties so if you happen to cut yourself while making a strop, you can make yourself a plaster too  :woohoo:

Absolutely Fuzzy, the reputation of our beautiful plug has been sullied  :twak:

I remember being in the national gallery in London a while back and saw a plug lying on the table between a Monet and a Rembrandt, hoards of people were gazing at it in awe of this wonderful masterpiece, they didn't care about the Van Goghs, the Botticellis or Renoirs, they were fixated by the plug left lying on the table, pride of place, a true work of art, well worth the admission fee  :salute:

Thanks guys

Day 7

More electrics today, this time i got to use the flathead

Top wire cutter works well with copper wire

And for no reason other than i said i would try and use all tools, i will put everyone out their misery wondering what gauge of that said wire was..

And that is the end of the challenge, considering its age i say it did very well, a bit short of tools though but all in all a very well built sturdy tool, seems to me it was intended for use by Electricians, i am not an electrician but i still give it a big thumbs up, it is no Spirit killer though.
Only two issues to report, no Phillips and the clasp that holds the pliers closed, it slides over the plier handle but when the pliers are open i found it slides back down when in use limiting the ability of wire cutters as the clasp stops full closure of the pliers, its annoying to open the clasp again to fully cut the wire, it is a 50 year old tool though so i wont complain too much, and did i say the gimlet is awlsome? that more than makes up for it  :tu:

And for scale here it is lined up with the usual suspects

I think i should have used a silver Surge for this photo  :)
