My metal eating babies
on: January 08, 2019, 07:08:41 AM
I built the first grinder from a kit mid-2018, went for the stronger 1.5kW option with a Variable Frequency Drive....i.e. speed control.

The first one I got with the largest contact wheel I could afford and a platten, former for 1x72" belts and the latter running 2/72" belts.

The severance package for my latest retrenchment/redundancy was more than expected, so I decided to tool up rather than slowly live out what was left.....which is sickening.

First grinder I took a week's leave to build it, now I have 2 jobs and no leave so the build was delayed.  I started assembly first chance I had.....afternoon of 24th December

......and the drive wheel was the wrong fit for the motor

To put it mildly, that completely utterly irrevocably removed any wind that was left in my sails for 2018   My success was not throwing......stuff.....around at this point.

I got the correct drive wheel yesterday, and nothing could stop me  :woohoo:

Assembled the grinder and optimized both for the belts each would be permanently running now.

Will add some photos later:

Sometimes this can be a very significant achievement (depending on the provocation)  :tu:

I've tried having soft cuddly stuff nearby frustration areas to throw around when needed. Somehow that just don't work though. Hammering stuff in general does provide some therapy and is a good second choice.  :tu:

More pictures please? :)

Heavy bag.  I also have seen some take to angle iron.  They try as they might to bend it.  Lots of frustrations exhausted trying to bend steel.  I worked in shop for few years with guys who threw stuff or beat on stuff.  The heavy bag is really nice.

Nice grinders.   :like:

More pictures please? :)

I'm busy building the stand and the enclosure for the VFD's, will post some more pics soon including few at my own expense that should have you  about my welding

A too weak grinder is a terrible frustration,  that said, you don't  stop a 1.5kW motor and touching any belt is bed.......just pray it's not the 36 grits monster.  I've seriously drawn blood walking too close by the new ones on the wall!

Thanks to the VFD's you can't even stop the belt when it's running at walking pace  8)

Beautiful!
Thanks Tony, it'll be a while before my skills match the capabilities of those machines.  :salute:

The grinds I've seen you do always look good to me Mate   :salute:

And now you can never say 'It was all the fault of my grinder'   :P :D

I ordered some blanks water-jet cut from O1 tool steel......imagine a small flat file broken in half and you know exactly what the "blanks" look like.

I shape the tip and grind in the bevels......I've done 4 so far and not to brag, people that see them are amazed.

Simple truth is in true rookie style all of them show the infamous 1"-bite.

These strong grinders will always be a blessing and a curse, a direct comparison can be made to a sharp knife.  :salute:

Funny thing, I'm not a fan of the hollow grind, but some people want it, and I've since had to admit it has it's uses  :salute: Small blade with a hollow grind from a big wheel is a pretty good performer but I only have a 1" wheel.

If I had a 2" wheel I'd have a 2" bite

It might be that I put them in while fixing the plunges, something that I'm happy to report I'm getting good at  8)

Yesterday afternoon finished the 3rd stand and painted both new ones, that kept me busy till 19:30 so no progress on the cabinet.

I need to drill holes and install perspex windows so I can see the displays of the VFD's, hang the cabinet on the wall and then wire in the whole lot.

I pushed myself a bit yesterday, hot as hell here and working on the floor is a killer, so I'll see how much I get done.  :salute:

Hopefully This afternoon and Saturday morning will be enough because I have a heat treating and forging appointment Saturday afternoon  :gimme:

Hollow grinds look bloody hard to do to me,  :ahhh
I do everything convex, covers a multitude of sins
Added to poor lighting in my pictures.....

It's good to see your progress Mate!   :tu:

I grind free-hand on my mentor's insistence, you just need to get the angle almost right and later on the wheel catches the bevel and you can feel it's right  :salute:

Worked my smurf off this afternoon

Very nice indeed! :tu: :like:

How is that little 1" width grinder working out for you? I've seen it around but been on the fence about getting one.

That power supply list on the wall is great too!

Depends very much on what you want to use it for.....a general shop tool yes, a worthwhile belt grinder no...... :salute:

I was basically thinking some minor touch-ups on small stuff castings. Then again I already do that anyway, so not sure how much easier or faster it would actually get. More options are generally good though.

Scary amount of money hanging on the wall, the red 36 grit ceramics cost almost as much as the rest together, but you can't comprehend how that belt eats steel.
