SAK Climber - Heavy Mod
on: September 01, 2019, 06:09:25 PM
Modified Climber with Phillips back tool added, and small blade changed for inline awl...

Layer 1
Openers but swapped around so that I can use blade backspring. Phillips back tool. Backspring needed modifying to allow closing of tools. Large flat pivot area reprofiled to get correct opening angles. Phillips shank thinned slightly for layer.

Layer 2
Scissors. Backspring reshaped on outside to allow Phillips to close flush.

Layer 3
Large Blade and Awl from 93mm Pioneer. Awl thinned to fit layer and pivot hole reduced with brass bushing to 2.5mm. Unmodified backspring with corkscrew.

Central two liners cut out to accommodate Phillips back tool. Lost the keyring attachment point as not using the normal opener layer backspring, but will use the shim that is used with the Compact that has the keyring.

Pictures are test fitting. Still some work to do before it gets final assembly.

Nice! You can't beat a 93mm awl in a 91mm frame

Nice work! I'm on the fence about the awl VS small blade. I love them both and use then a lot (depending on SAK)

Thanks everyone, it’s coming along.  :hatsoff:

Well I missed something...to use the blade layer backspring for the openers, apart from swapping the drivers around that then required some work for them to close and detent correctly, both the Phillips AND the backspring need thinning down a little to around 2mm, otherwise too much slop on the tools. Was a bit of work, but all correct now.

Everything needs a good polish and I need to make up some brass pins for reassembly, probably tomorrow. Should be a nice build when done.  :salute:

Wow Max,
This is a very interesting and ambitious mod you are doing.  I love the selection of tools in a compact package. :salute:

Max, awesome job to make the Climber package even more functional.  I like the details for making the phillps fit better into the frame, would love to see how the openers fit with the spring once you are done.  Great job! :like:

Thanks DT  :hatsoff:

Hi comis. Blade layer backspring a bit strong for the cap lifter tool because the geometry is different. I’m trying to modify just one side of each interacting interface so that it’s repeatable. So I’m not changing the tips of the backspring, just thinning it down and adding cut outs for the closed positions. No change to the tin opener tool. But some work on the cap lifter pivot. I will take detailed pics of the tool reshaping and open/close geometry before closing it all up.  :tu:

Nice idea and work!
Would it maybe be possible to use brass shims at the tools to avoid having to thin out  the backspring and Phillips, which I imagine being tedious?

Yes, this would work for the opener tools. Around 0.3mm so hardly noticeable. But it won’t look good on the back Phillips and the shim would need to be small diameter so you may still get some wiggle, probably side to side.  :dunno:

Last work done today. Next few pics show final assembly. Reused a scale I was a little careless grinding the pin off, but just a little cosmetic mark you won’t see, so I’m not too worried. Rest of the build went well.  :tu:
