Leatherman Mod questions
on: January 16, 2019, 04:11:34 PM
Poncho’s Charge knife mod in conjunction with Meat eater on Netflix inspired me to make a hunting based mod.

I’m looking to mod a single “arm” from a LM to contain a saw for breaking down bones. I also want to toss in a file and awl.  If I feel extra “froggy”, I might try to fit a small ferro rod into a bit holder. That way, I can touch up other knives, start a fire etc. This will mainly be a saw I don’t mind getting DIRTY with some redundancy.

So, several questions. Considering the cost of an extra awl, I’m debating starting with a Surge.  I feel like the un-used tool from a Surge would sell better as well to help offset the cost of a donor.  Scissors, bit exchanger, etc.

1) Will a wave file and saw work in the outer tool slots from a Surge?

2) Do the Surge/Charge/Wave all contain the hidden lanyard loop?

3) If I start with a rebar/ST 300, will that file work for touching up knives?

The ST/rebar will probably be cheaper, but I prefer the tools that disassemble with regular torx bits since I don’t have Loki’s tools.

We discussed question 1 and I am not sure :D as for question 2 I know all Waves and Charges have the hidden lanyard ring and I think the Surge does as well but I would have to check once I got home :salute: and question 3 could be up for debate ::) :D I would say in an emergency or survival situation they will work but I wouldn't use that type of file cut on most if not all of my knives :D they are a bit to aggressive for touch ups :salute:

Good luck with the mod :tu: and take plenty of pics

Thanks Poncho!

I don’t anticipate to ever plan to use the file on knives intentionally. I have a field sharpener for planned usage.  But either way, I think the diamond file might be worth the extra.

Most everything on this will be backup. The saw will be the intentional part.
