Shipping question?
on: January 20, 2019, 04:27:23 PM
Didn't see anywhere else to ask, so here it is
I want to send a small item from Atlantic Canada to the Netherlands, it weighs next to nothing and the package would be approximately 8×8×8 inches, I checked with the Canada post office in my community and was quoted 78.00 Canadian, this seems crazy but I have no experience doing this, any thoughts?
The item would be a gift to another member

Thanks for any help

That seems insane.

I once tried to ship something vis UPS to Europe. UPS quoted me something like $80.  UPS would have taken the parcel over to the USPS for final delivery. (Really, they said so.)  I said that my shipping directly with the USPS would cost less. "Well, we do change a small handling fee."

So I went down the street to the USPS where they charged me $23.

Does Canada Post have some on-line software?  I now use USPS online software to complete customs forms. In that process I enter the package weight and get an estimate of the charge (I think I could even pay the postage and print a shipping label, but I prefer to go down to the post office and make sure everything is correct.)

Shipping from the US to Europe is $16.50-$23.50 for parcels under 2 pounds.

Just know that the inexpensive option doesn't have tracking and insurance. But that shouldn't be a real concern unless the item is valuable.

I've had five or six untracked packages from Canada containing Swiss Army Knives in the past years and each and every time it was delivered to me (in the Netherlands) within a week!

I did take note, but it's an inexpensive fun item, I expect it to get there, and no worries if something were to happen

I don't ship international, but I know parcel carriers (UPS, USPS, FedEx...) have the thing called "dimensional weight", which means a large 2-lb package costs more to ship than a smaller 2-pound one. Keeping your package close to net shape of the item may save you some money.

I'm happy to report the package made it unharmed, using the most basic option from Canada Post
You can see what it was in Serenas corner
