February Fixie Challenge
on: January 22, 2019, 05:20:36 PM
I'm planning on doing a 30-day Fixed blade challenge in February.  And a couple days in March.

Winter is the perfect time for a Fixed Blade challenge for me. That's when I rely on a fixie more than ever. I'm wearing gloves and fire making is a bit harder. Fixies fit the bill perfectly.

I wanted to start this thread a bit early to see if anybody else was interested in a Fixie challenge.  Sound off if you are interested!  :tu:

Rules:

1. Post a picture of a fixed blade knife for 30 consecutive days, starting on 01 February 2019.

I'll be carrying the same fixed blade every day, all day. I'll likely carry a SAK as well, but the fixed blade will be my primary tool for the challenge duration. I'll use it as much as possible. If the fixed blade knife can't do the job, and I resort to using my SAK, I'll explain why the Fixie wasn't up to the job.

Pretty simple challenge. But, then, fixies are pretty simple tools.

Most of my time is spent in an urban environment, therefore I have 2 questions:

1-would this little guy qualify to the challenge?
2-do I have to choose one knife for the whole duration of the challenge, or can I rotate between fixed blades?

I'm interested in giving it a try, might be a small crkt minimalist if I join.
Can I switch between my two minimalists during the challenge?

FlnixNOver, et al, I kept the rules for this challenge simple. The Fixed blade merit badge just requires a photo for every day of the 30-day challenge. As far as I'm concerned, a fixie is a fixie is a fixie. So, yes, your smaller knife is a Fixed Blade in my book.

Remember that Ötzi the "Ice Man" was carrying a tiny knife (13cm OAL). If he chose to carry such a fixie, who are we to argue?

While I am going to try to stick with one Fixed-blade knife, the merit badge rules don't specify that only one knife can be used for the 30 day period. Personally, I think a challenge is more challenging if just one knife is used through out. But I think you are free to set the challenge up however it will best suit you! (Hey, I'm not a mod; so a mod may chime in a contradict me with better information.)

At the moment, my whole fixie collection comes down to that small guy (it's a clone of the Hurricane Razer  ) and a Nieto Yesca Mini.
I want to take the challenge with the first one, and will try to do so for the 30 day duration, but it's comforting to know I can have options.
Nevertheless, like you said, it's a challenge, and I agree that using just one makes it even more of a challenge!
Game on!

One last question though, this being my first challenge, should I post the daily pic in this thread, or do I need to create my own?

Glad you are joining us!   :tu:

This will be the thread for us awl to post our daily Fixie Fotos.... It does help the mods if you label your photos, e.g. Day 1, Day 2, and so on.

(Sorry, couldn't resist. )

What the h3ll do you guys do for work that you can carry a sheathed fixed blade at your side all day?

I just can't joint this one as much as I would like to use my "new to me" Buck Vanguard. I no longer work at a school, which means I MIGHT be able to carry a sheathed Buck 110, but even a slung Vanguard would be too much for me to pass off at work.

Sorry fellas. Cant play but I'll be monitoring

Couldn't you keep your Vanguard in a bag or briefcase?   :pok:

I DO happen to carry a bag of tricks...and I DO already carry some other things in there , like an ace bandage, 2 Nalgenes of water, vitamins, extra warm hat, socks, my notebook, gum, snacks, an LM Surge, Vic Huntsman, Byrd Rescue...for when Im hiking and such...

I suppose I COULD keep the Vanguard in there. As of last week, instead of working IT for the school department I'm workin IT for a town and working outnof the electrical utility building...and i suppose i have the right to be an adult again and carry real  scissors and not havin to watch my mouth around little kids... MAYBE I could get away with carrying something like the Vanguard in the sheath, in the bag...

But what the hell would I use it for in an IT environment?

Thats the challenge then for you Thunda.  What the heck will you use the fixed blade for?  You might surprise yourself.  Carry the knife in your bag if you need to and when off put it on your hip.  You just might find yourself reaching for it more than you think.

I work in an office environment, so, for me, a small fixie is easier to justify as opposed to a bigger one, that one has to hip carry.
Nevertheless, on a daily basis, I find myself reaching, more than anything, for my 58mm SAK.
So, for me, this will be the challenge... To use a small fixie instead of the 58mm...

I might try this as I always have my little Fallkniven  Kolt on me at work. The challenge will be finding something different to post with it every day.

The only tool I'd ever use in an IT deparment is a 10# hammer. So I do see your point.

Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

I don't think the challenges are intended to encourage members to do anything illegal or hazardous. While hospital rooms may have internet connections, prison cells are less reliable when it comes to MTo access.

Remember: the challenge rule is one picture of your fixed blade every day. I don't interpret that to mean that you have have it with you 24/7 or shower with it or try to smuggle your fixie into a courthouse.

Use and carry the fixie when you can. Post at least one picture of your fixie every day showing how it was used, or not used.

I'm fortunate in that I can carry a fixed blade knife all-day, every day. For this challenge, just do what you can do. Hopefully you will learn some of the joys and benefits of having/using a fixed blade knife. Worst case: you will learn that fixies just are't your thing and are not sufficiently practical for you. That would be a result right there.  :tu:
