I wanted to do a short post about threading a needle for leatherwork without a knot.

I covered this already, and I think Borg got what I was saying, but I wanted to be more clear in case I was too vague.

1) thread the needle as usual, and then poke the point through the tag en of the thread.

2) work the tag end down the needle and over the eye (this idea is exaggerated in this photo for clarity)

3 now work the running end of the thread through the eye and tighten the thread up. It will form a very small 'knot'

The needle won't fall off and this can easily be pulled through leather without breaking.   :tu:

Thanks!

I really struggled with that knot problem but it makes perfect sense to do it that way, the knot itself wont be much bigger than the needle, thanks for the pictorial :tu:

Oh, I like it a lot...enough to buy another! I am in Atlanta today and will be at the gun and knife show tomorrow. Looking for another Triathlete. Will be sending it the Behring to have a handle put on it.  :woohoo:  Because these are hand made,  I want a fuller fatter body as this one is slimmer and narrower. It just looks better but will take either or!

Excellent, cant wait to see what handle you choose  :tu:

I had a chance to do more work on the sheath for the Dozier knife today.

I used the Ulu to skive and trim my welt. I thought I trimmed it short enough to accommodate the fold, but this would prove to be incorrect.

After the welt was trimmed, I glued it in place and then prepared to glue the sheath closed.

You can see that the welt ends well before the centerline, but the way the sheath folded, it still got bound-up a little. Not sure why that was the case, perhaps because this is fairly thick leather.

Here’s the sheath all glued up:

The finish looks a bit streaky here. I think I could have applied more to even it all out, but I don’t mind it as is. After I oil and wax it, it will look a bit more even and darker.

You can also see that I’ve left a generous outer margin of welt hanging out. This was intentional, because I can now trim it and sand it to be flush.

Here it is after being cleaned up and the edges chamfered:

Overall, I think it looks pretty good. However, you can see where my chamfering tool has scuffed the finish (kinda cool actually). And, of course, I still need to dye the edges. Needing to re-dye the sheath is one of the reasons I usually don’t dye my pieces so soon. On the other hand, dying the pieces before assembly does seem better if you want a more even finish.

Here's the sheath after it got more dye and was then burnished.

I actually think it looks pretty good here. At this point, I’m convinced I can only mess it up, but it can’t stay this way, so I moved on to laying out my stitching lines….

(did you notice that I burnished the edges... :pok:)

This time I used my dividers to mark in my stitching line. Since the leather is pre-dyed, I didn’t want to use the groover. This will make for a better final look.

Yes, I burnished it a bit more.

This evening I was able to stitch the sheath together. In the preceding pictures, you can see that I used a narrower welt and ended up stitching closer to the edge. It worked out nicely, and I think there is sufficient margin to ensure the sheath’s strength. (My original welt line was about 10mm wide. I set my dividers at 5+mm wide to mark out my stitch line.)

At this point, it could be called done, however; tomorrow I’ll burnish the edges some more, then oil/wax it, and burnish the edges. I might also burnish the edges a bit more.

Day 15

Thanks for the kind comments! This is actually a knife that I made with my own two hands...and a lot of guidance. After watching one too many Forged in Fires, I decided to try it out. After scouring the inter webs, I found a local knife maker who was teaching some classes.
The metal is 1095 and the scales are black micarta. The class was just for the knife, no sheath but searching around, I found a local company that makes custom kydex sheaths. I try to support local businesses as often as I can.
Up till now, I have used it for minor cutting tasks: opening mail, boxes, etc.

My original intent for the knife is to be my main knife for backpacking and camping. I figure since I am getting the rest of my gear ready for spring, this challenge will provide the proper motivation for seeing what this knife is all about.

Great job with that, Ken.

Having made a couple of knives myself, I know first hand that it is not as easy as it looks (at least for me ). Your's looks excellent--I'd take that hiking any day!   :tu:

Day #15 - my main carry got little use today (opened a bag of jelly beans, which I completely forgot to photograph), so, it was up to the backup, to pickup the slack and go on cheese duty.
I gotta say, a skeletonized handle may be good for cleaning, but it's a challenge to grip while trying to cut a cheese block in half...
I'm thinking of buying some G10, and making a proper handle for it. In the meantime, I could wrap it in some paracord (Image removed from quote.)
