If you had to choose which one on a new Leatherman tool which is more important for you to have and why ?

I voted for the awl as in all my years of owning a Leatherman I've never once used the can opener, the awl on the other hand has been used a lot.

I went with the awl.
I have used can openers, but it was awlways by choice. I bought cans that needed can openers just so I could use can openers. And even if I find myself in a situation where I have to open one of those cans, I can improvise with a number of implements.

The reamer is too good not to have. Especially a good one, like the Pioneer one, or the Surge one.

Awl every time.  I never use the can opener on my LM or any plier based MT.  Isn't that why we carry a SAK

Another vote for awl :salute: I turned my can opener on my Rebar to a package opener and have used it that way but never to open a can ::) I use the awl for various tasks to save my blade though :salute: and wish the Wave platform had an awl :salute:

I will say that the wire stripper notch on the can opener is a feature worth retaining though

The only good thing about the can opener is it comes with a wire insulation stripper, on the Leathermans it's not even a good bottle opener either. I think the can opener is a relic on most multitools. I prefer the modern package opener which makes opening packages a breeze. I tried using the can opener once to open clamshell and it wasn't great for that.

Awl is a tool I use regularly.  Can openers; Scouts, SAKs, and similar I use them a lot, but not on LMs.

I voted awl, but I'd prefer if they got rid of one of the crappy flat blades and gave both.

:iagree: a can opener may have other uses, a hook/curved tool is a good to have.

Awl.

In all my MTs and SAKs I have used the Awl way more times that the can opener

I am not someone who drinks out of capped bottles or needs to open cans on a regular basis anyway

I've also voted for the awl. Heck, most awls (provided they are inline) can in a pinch be used as a makeshift can opener anyway - maybe one could tweak the design a little to make it even better at doing that (and add a wire stripper, while we're at it).

I say both. That's why I have a Rebar.
Water, water, every where,
 And all the boards did shrink;
 Water, water, every where,
 Nor any drop to drink.

Used the awl for all sorts of prodding and probing, never used the can opener for opening cans as yet  :tu:
