Please recommend a particular flashlight
on: January 23, 2019, 09:06:40 AM
Looking for a small flashlight that can fit in a Leatherman Surge sheath loop or pocket.
I want it to turn on/off no strobe modes or low modes.
Want it to run on AAs or AAAs, since I will be using rechargeable batteries.
I've had terrible luck with Maglite battery door seizing shut, so no Maglite.
I also want to avoid anything with those cheapo plastic battery carriages as they are usually a failure point on any flashlight I've had with that feature.

Any help appreciated. I really don't want to spend hours of my life researching flashlights. Thanks!

I've had good luck with Fenix lights, although most do have multiple modes.  Could look at an E12, E05, maybe E01 if you can still find one.

I prefer the twist switch (like the E05 or E01) for pocket or keychain carry; button switches always seem prone to accidental in pocket activation.

It might help if you showed the spot where you need it to ride?
I am going to assume it is small?

The Streamlight Micro is probably the toughest and most popular small and simple light going and has been for a long time!
Cheap and solid and simple.

The New Preon on the other hand is pretty sweet and about the same size but can be a lot brighter too depending on how you set it up.

The Olight suggested already is also a great and really bright light but again I have no idea if it will for it your tube or not?
I also like to have more runtime than the Olight offers and if you want a single speed light you sort of have to pick either runtime or output going in.

Another great pick is a Fenix E01 but it might be bright enough but you don't say how bright you need either so.....

Also I have only had a Maglite seize shut if I left Alkaline batteries inside unused for some time.
Recharging batteries should not leak which is what causes this and ruins the light.
If you have not used recharging batteries in a Mag yet this would be another great one to try again if one will fit where you need it to?

Fenix LD02, I have 2 in regular use.  1 hangs from my house keys and has never failed in any way.  Its a push button but you can always loosen the head to deactivate so no accidental ons.

Yes there are 3 modes but no disco modes ( blinking ).  The light comes on in MED/LOW/HIGH.  The low is very usable at 8 lm 14hr run time.  Med is 25 lm 4 hr run time.  High is a respectable 100 lm for about an hour run time.

It has a nice pocket clip that can be reversed so you can wear the light on the bill of a call cap.  I've never used Fenix warranty so I cannot speak to how good it is however I've never had to use it so......

The Olight suggested is a great light as well.

My other suggestion is about price and size.  Lumentop EDC01.  120/32/5 lm.  Run times 30min/4hr/36hr.  Its comes in a few colors other than black too which is cool.  I dont have one but I do have their Worm that looks identical tho larger and only 2 modes.  My light has been flawless.  The EDC01 is less than 10 bucks so IMO its worth a shot.

I have a Thrunite Ti3 I keep in the side of my wave sheath. I like the knurled surface for this use as I'm less concerned with it slipping from the sheath

Agree with the Fenix E01. They are still available although in limited color options. About 13 lumens of rather ugly light single mode and tough as nails. Considered one of the most reliable small lights ever made. Around $10.

It would be cool if it clipped into one of these loops but that is a secondary use it just has to fit in my jean pockets, I wear normal man sized jeans, not skinny jeans.

Olights are solid as well, though I prefer the I3S to the I3E.  Multiple modes, tail stand capability, and comes with a pocket clip.

The I3E/I3S/I3T are all great lights, but he stated that he just wants on/off no strobe or low modes.  That's the $10 I3E.

Yes. I don't want anything with strobe mode at all, that's an annoyance. If it has a low/high mode I might consider it if it's push button. Thanks.

The i3t is AAA powered although it's a little bigger. Click button on the back and only has two modes, high and low. It claims 180 lumens on high.

Actually, I just received this one in copper in the mail today

Streamlight micro stream as mentioned earlier.  On/off AAA light.  As simple as it gets these days.  If you want to get fancy theres a USB rechargeable one with 2 modes, 250/50 so its not "low" per se.  Both are push button on/off with pocket clip.
