What clothing to wear in Norway, august?
on: January 24, 2019, 08:37:09 PM
So, I'll be visiting Norway in August this year.
From what I can find online, temperatures varry greatly...

So, anyone got a clue on what clothes to take, without having 5 bags on me to prepare for everything and anything?

Should I work with layers?
Should I take hiking shoes or just sports shoes?

Any input appreciated! :salute:

I did layers while in Norway, but that was in early Feb.  :dunno:
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

As for shoes, learn from my lesson! :dwts:
High heel dress shoes are slippy on ice.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Where in Norway are you going?
I would do layers, easier to regulate according to weather.
As for shoes, I would say it comes down to what you are doing?

Pants, t-shirt, and a rain and water proof jacket for the rainy and windy days. Wikipedia has expected max and min temperatures along with precipitation (just look up the closest cities), so you can use that to plan. Welcome!

Layers. Definitly.

I was in Norway in august 2016, I had snow in Røros, and 25°C in Oslo. Lot of rain in between too ! :-D Love this country, love love love. I hope to have the chance to go back there !

At Flåm, if weather allows it, try the "Fjord Safari" ;-)

Stavanger, dude, we hadn't time to stop by, I regret it.

I don't know for how long you are going, but if it is only a few days, say 3 to 5, I would only pack a carry on and not check any luggage.
I would  wear zip off technical hiking pants, a merino anti stink T-shirt, a wool sweater, and some type of low hiking shoes like Salomon X-Ultras. I would pack extra underwear, socks, a spare T-shirt, a technical button down UV protective shirt, a jeans, a pack-in-its-own-pocket rain jacket, a pair of fabric lightweight casual summer shoes, a Matador packable backpack for excursions, and a dopp kit.
If it would be colder then normal at the last minute, I would add a packable down vest.
I recon that would even keep you some space in your carry on, so you can buy a souvenir when you are there.
Oh, and take an pre-stamped padded envelope with your home address, to send back the pocketknife you will be buying when you land there. (No sharps in a carry on)  :salute:

If you are doing a lot of walking when seeing the fjords bring good shoes, it's usually quite steep hills along there.
If you have room for it in your luggage you can bring "city" shoes for those kind of activities.

And a waterproof jacket is a must!

Enjoy your trip and take pictures

I would choose trail run shoes. It's summer, so they also look good under shorts, and they are also good for long walks/hikes.

I love mine.

I was in Norway in August a few years ago: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,61152.msg1132704.html#msg1132704  If you are planning to spend any time outdoors then I'd definitely recommend some good waterproofs.  ;)  When it wasn't raining it was very nice though.

In all seriousness, August in Norway doesn't sound cold, so don't worry about it.
What would you wear in Belgium in May?
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

IIRC I had;

Waterproofs
A couple of quick dry shirts
A selection of T-shirts
A warm pile fleece jacket for evenings.
A lighter fleece top
A couple of hiking trousers (one with zip off legs)
I was travelling as lightly as possible so made use of a hostel laundry at times.

I definitely took walking shoes and flip-flops.

All depends on what you are planning on doing of course.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Yes, though further north than the area you're going. Here's some weather statistics for Stavanger: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stavanger#Climate I guess Belgium in May isn't too far off, as Don Pablo wrote?

Edit: I see those numbers are old enough that I would expect higher temperatures and the amount of rain tending towards either of the extremes these days.

Oh, and if you're going up in the mountains, remember the weather there can change very quickly. As people have said, flexible layers is the way to go.
