seeking advice about my new MP1
on: January 12, 2020, 05:37:44 AM
I have been wanting a Gerber MP1 for a couple years now and once I saw that the gerber website wasn't offering them anymore, I figure it was time to pull the trigger.    I bought one on Ebay and it just arrived the other day.  It was described as new but with no wear or damage.

Problem is the bit driver and the two slotted driver tools right next to the bit driver have a lot of wiggle in them.  The main blade is right next to them and it is rock solid.  I believe this is because there is a liner separating them.
Do any other MP1 owners have this problem?

I have tried tightening the bolt on that pivot point but it is as tight as it will go.

Should I send it back?  Any ideas?

After speaking to several Gerber representatives last year, I discovered the Gerber MP series has been discontinued.  You can still buy these brand new from various distributors and in my experience, I highly recommend this.  Having owned a Gerber 30-001031 Maintenance Pro, I am very impressed with this unit.  Easily one of the best multi tools for what I use this for.

That said, having purchased a factory sealed, brand new Gerber MP1  31-001142 from a reputable authorized distributor, I noticed an issue with the 1/4 inch driver that was the most pronounced.  I've since returned this unit, yet if I had to guess, this was an issue with the magnet and broaching.  With the unit I owned, all the components seemed to be open with moderate ease.   As this unit has been discontinued by Gerber, I am not sure what services they might be able to offer with this unit.

Gerber 31-001142 is the only Gerber product I've ever had any issues with, yet since I bought this brand new and from an credible distributor, maybe Gerber might have been more apt to working with me?  Hard to say.

Unfortunately with discontinued products, it's not always possible to buy brand even though this is optimal.  This is possible and I am not making any allegations, I'd factor in the malleability .the vernacular used.  There is some leeway permitted with market place distributors such as eBay.
