Working on a new SAK display!
on: February 03, 2019, 05:29:04 PM
Just a little teaser on this work in progress: a new SAK display that i'm going to create inside an old ammunition box!

What you're looking at here is just me trying out different possibilities for the part of the display that will hold the SAKs that will go in to this display.

More pictures will follow as the project progresses!

This will be interesting! Are we talking layers in height or like a bee keeper hive?

I'm not sure what you mean with the bee hive thing, but i'm planning on using an ammunition crate (not one of those metal boxes, it will be a wooden crate with dimensions of about 60 x 40 x 15 cm) and putting a plate on the bottom of it with openings that hold the SAKs in place (so they all stay in their place in a nice straight line). The plate holding the SAKs will probably have an angle so you can have a good look at them when the crate is opened. At least this all is the plan. But things can always change as the project evolves.

Nice - like the idea - how are you going to accomodate 108s and 93s on the same tray ?
Teaser for teaser, how about this original Victorinox tray ?

Using an ammo crate makes a lot of sense to store military knives. It is so true that Victorinox did it for a fancy soldier knife collection IIRR

I’ll probably make a couple of columns, each with its own SAK size.

I think I understand what he meant by "beehive thing". There would be several VERTICAL trays, suspended from top. Would not work with your relatively flat box. But with 15 cms you can easily accomodate at least three trays on top of each other.

That is what I meant. But then he would have to lift every section up to look at them individually so not much showcase but maybe more storage arrangement when I think about it

No real news on the ammo crate display, still waiting for the crate to arrive. The shop I ordered it from promised next day delivery so I expected that since I ordered it saturday it would have been shipped monday. However not shipped yet, not even an update and emails from today and yesterday are still unanswered...  :wait:

At this moment I am glad I paid with PayPal so if I hear nothing in the next days I will make a claim.

Well I did decide that for the pieces that hold the SAKs I will use all black MDF wood like this:

In other news: a while back I showed this cigar box containing my 58mm collection:

Because it is full and my collection isn’t finished yet :D I decided I needed a bigger Cigar box. Instead of smoking up 50 cigars I bought an empty and used Cigar box from the interweb. It needed some TLC so I sanded it, and now I’m oiling it so it looks nice and worthy of holding my precious SAKs.

Forgot to take a before picture so the lid was already done before I took the first picture.

Inside I will fit some dark grey felt.

To be continued!

I reckon re-habilitated Corps Diplomatique boxes should only be lined with grey flannel, not felt, and used to display Ambassadors !

(I should know I spent all my career in the french foreign service)

Have been working on the cigar box for the 58mm SAK collection.

Used my little sharp Buck knife to cut the felt, and put it in the box.

I have nothing against Bucks, I own a couple myself.  But for a SAK project? :ahhh

Edit: Looking good though.

You mean on the rip through the green Corps Diplomatique sticker?

I think there's not really anything I can do about that without making it worse, so i'm going to leave that as it is.

I could try to remove the sticker, but that probably would only leave me with sticker residue. I may still be able to try to get some of that red paint off it though. There was also red paint on the bottom of the cigar box, and when I oiled it the paint dissolved into the oil. So maybe I can use the oil as well to remove it from the green sticker.

I was thinking it would look nice with the inside lid being covered
in the same colour felt that you used on the inside of your box  :tu:
