SAK scissor sharpening ?
on: December 09, 2008, 04:03:07 PM
I am finally getting the hang of sharpening regular blades but my swisschamp scisors are getting slightly dull and would be grateful for suggestions for putting the edge back on them

On this subject, and considering the relative delicacy of small scissors, here's a thought:

There used to be a sewing mill near here, and they employed several sharpeners for the scissors used in the plant. From what some of the employees have told me, the sharpeners used to sharpen the scissors by cutting medium to coarse-grit sandpaper. Supposedly this limited the blade wear from more aggressive sharpening methods, ensured an edge-long sharpening and prolonged scissor life . I don't know whether this works, but I plan on trying it. I currently use a ceramic scissors sharpener sold at Wal-Mart. It works moderately well (it gets the middle of the blade sharp, but the hinge-end and tips stay relatively dull).

Just thought I'd pitch this out to see if anyone had tried the sandpaper trick.

Luck, Bill

I use a sharpmaker, it seems to work OK.  Admittedly on something as heavy as the Champ its a bit of a pain but certainly doable.

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

You don't sharpen it by cutting sandpaper heh. Use sandpaper on some hard backing and sharpen like you would with a benchstone.

No, I had heard that CUTTING the sandpaper made the scissors sharper by the act of the abrasives passing the cutting edges. Perhaps the ladies from the mill saw the sharpeners using a strop or something. Like I said, I've never tried it, just threw it out there.

Bill.

I dont like the sandpaper because it scratches the metal around the blade.
My secret method is:

If its and old scissor fist tighten the single screw,
Then fold up some aluminum paper, from 3 to 4 times and cut the aluminum with the scissor, super most excelent result!!!

Exactly tin foil/Reynolds rap.

Depending on the scissor size/strength do 2 to 6 bends and the cut.

Here is one video,

Enjoy.
