AllTuls, Wild Mini Multi Tools
« on: June 02, 2019, 07:38:23 AM »
Earlier in the week teachers were on strike, the weather was shocking and my kids ended up in the office.
It took them all of two seconds to spot some new stuff on my desk.

"Er Dad, can we play with these?"
"No way, but you can test them for me."
"Okay then, we'll need a bag of chips, bottle of juice and some licorice straps..."

A few things to mention:

All the OPTs were tested rambo style - ie not installed on a lanyard or keychain etc etc.

Pics were retaken by me after testing because their pics contained some background stuff we can't show.

The kids (9 +12) both own and use MTs, SAKs, folders and more so testing is a cake walk for them.
With that said once the licorice kicked in their note taking turned to random sketches...
And obviously I will throw my two cents in here and there as I attempt write up their findings.

Big thanks to KeySmart for sending all the tools down under.
Dan had no problem when we told him we would give an honest opinion of the gear.
Thank you Dan.

The packaging.
Someone has worked very hard on these.
The layout, graphics, icons etc, all very eye catching and informative.

Testing Methodology.

The first twenty points consisted of various sized hex, flat and philips heads screwed into a 6in x 6in post.
Did they fit well, could they loosen them, could they tighten them, did they slip and was there any damage to the tool.
Spoke tools were tested on multiple wheels.
Crowbar was tested on small nails, pins, staples and with a hammer to split wood.
Box opener was used to break down three boxes for recycling.
Wire cutter was tested on paperclips and various sized electrical wiring.
And the bottle openers were used at the end of the day to open the staff drinks.

Comfort was noted next to usage and ranged from very pokey to comfy.
The last mark (subjective) was awarded for appearance.
Interestingly, as tools did better their look ranking went up, more on this phenomenon later.

Running through the AllTuls alphabetically we'll start with... Bear.
Liked: thick solid feeling
Disliked: the legs poking into me
Good: large flat driver
Other: overly large bottle opener, philips in way when using bottle opener
Not so good: philips driver slips - worst of all the tools tested

Move the improved philips to the front leg and reduce the bottle opener (9mm wrench) gap.

AllTul: Dino
Liked: knurling
Disliked: very pokey
Good: looks
Other: top of bottle opener is on the short side
Not so good: pokey bits

Round off a couple of the uncomfortable pokey bits.

AllTul: Owl
Liked: the way the nut wrenches are stacked
Disliked: slipping spoke wrenches
Good: comfortable tool to handle
Other: crowbar functioned well and was fun to use
Not so good: no flat or philips driver

Add flat and philips driver ears to the owl.

AllTul: Raptor
Liked: moving parts
Disliked: biner bites
Good: leverage
Other: uncomfortable tool, wire cutter limited to paperclips and very small electrical wire
Not so good: flat driver fail - just doesn't work, wrenches fail - sizes mislabeled and cutout design very prone to slipping

Redesign needed, too much metal for sub par function.

AllTul: Shark
Liked: how the gills look
Disliked: bottle opener hook catching on some hex heads
Good: comfortable tool to handle
Other: thin but not too thin, lightest of the AllTuls
Not so good: everyone fighting over who gets it

A box opener bevel from the nose to fin would win.

AllTul: Wolf
Liked: tanto tip
Disliked: philips location
Good: box opener super fun to break down boxes with
Other: comfort depends on tool being used
Not so good: overly large bottle opener

The kids thought that turning the blade over would solve the uncomfortable grips.

In third place was Owl, the crowbar was fun to use but missing drivers limit it somewhat.
Second place went to Wolf, ripping boxes to shreds is totally fun, just need to dial in the other tool locations.
And first place goes to Shark, top of the class in looks, feel and function.

Could I recommend you buy one of these AllTuls?
Ahhh no.
Because I would recommend you buy at least two of them!
That way you won't have to choose a favourite, plus animals like company.

zoidberg, thank you for a through writeup for each tool, looks like a fun collaborative effect between Dad and kids!

I don't know whether the 'blade' on the wolf could be improved either way, if people were to use the wrench hard.  I quite like the Shark tool, looks neat.

Btw, can't help but to notice the great tool stand, lego rules!  :tu:

Lol, I also used the lego photo setup - just clipped some material over it for the pics.
