Appreciating the boxcutter/utility knife

I realized that I really love these things. Maybe because I like using knives in ways you shouldn't  You can easily replace the blade, they cut through anything, and most of all, keep you from dulling or damaging your good blades.

I use them all the time, and what a great little tool they are! So show them off and talk about them

Mine, that I use is at work I will try to get a pic of it sometimes this week it is a Gerber EAB (Exchange A Blade) that I have had for a few years now The first one I had is actually still in use though and I had it for around 5 years Was wanting a new one and this one I guy I work with was always borrowing mine so I sold it to him for a few bucks He still has it and that has been probably close to 5 years now So those things are built to last and as long as you don't lose the screw they last and last

I am now looking at the BO ones

Appreciation would be a wrong choice of word in this instance.. Obsession would be more fitting Chako. As with all the rest of your stuffs... But keep them coming!

I love these knives and carry one most days, bought 5 of these a few years back, my favorite model so far:



they see most use at work, essential part of the kit



excellent to save your good knives when cutting fiberglass bands, when the hook blade is used 



I also made one myself for metal saw blades 



great for opening gravel or sand bags that would gunk up your pivots or scratch your knife blade

I have several. Favorite in my toolbox, far and away, is the Stanley 99... very comfy to use, holds a few blades. The screw is a PITA because it's a point of failure if you lose it. I have a Milwaukee with the quick change button that works well.

EDC size, I also have two options - the EAB, which is awesome, but a little uncomfortable for extended use, and a couple Quarks, which are great for a quick cut, but REALLY uncomfortable for extended use. Still, I use them quite often.

I worked at a factory from 1995- 2006 and for a brief period of time they told us no one was to carry a pocket knife because they considered them dangerous,but they would allow us to carry utility knives.  (even though no one in the history of the company had ever been threatened with a knife of any kind....not to mention the fact there were hammers, steel bars, screwdrivers, etc. laying on the tables where they could be used as a weapon by anyone who wanted to do damage to someone.)


(They said my Swiss Champ was a weapon, but they did not consider the utiIity knives to be weapons........there was no logic to their reasoning, so I  wrote a letter to the owner of the company and the top 4 people in the company and got them to allow regular pocket knives again)

They did not actually check anyone for a knife, so I had my Swiss Champ in my pocket everyday, but I just did not use it at work. I would use a utility knife to cut things instead.

I wonder if the parts are swappable... thinking BO/SS... ah... only the cutter blade, locking screw, blade holder part  and pivot looks swappable... the clip/liner lock is riveted to the frame...

I like my EAB I carry it any time I think It'll be useful.
Also makes a good loaner  when someone asks if they can borrow my real knife.

Is the EAB atleast tolerable when doing heavy cutting or just lots of it?

I've cut double wall cardboard, blister packs and used it to trim a hole in dry wall.
If I had several boxes to do at a sitting or was hanging dry wall a bigger handle would really help.

I have used it for all kinds of cutting and been as satisfied with it as a regular utility blade knife I have cut heavy gauge copper flashing and aluminum flashing with it, it has opened many boxes and cut plenty of cardboard with it, cut plastic banding that holds brick cubes together and never had any issue my other one did get a little wobble in the handle but that was after 5 years of harder use than what this one has had and the guy that has it still uses now

   As with most types of edged tools,the lowly box cutter has also come into my accumulation in many designs.Some are designed for multiple uses such as scraping. It wasn't until many years after I started using a standard box cutter did I realize that in most of them you can take out the blade and turn it 90 degrees to use as a scraper.
   The only down side I see to replaceable blade utility knives is that most of them use blades that will only fit that particular knife.Many of the early ones used single edge razor blades of the standard type. There were also many types of single edge razor blades when safety razors started to replace straight razors but that is another story......
   So without further ado I will post up a few of mine and try to give info about them.

#1 Armstrong Notched Blade Knife.Cast iron housing.Still looking for extra blades.
#2 Box cutter promotional item from Swift's Cleansers.Uses a single edge razor blade.
#3 Conrad box cutter uses a single edge razor blade.Has a ruler built in to the top edge.
#4 A modern Craftsman folding utility knife with wood handles and highly polished with removeable blade guard.

Those all look so cool, Ray I especially  the Gilette ones though
