Tell me about the Gerber Recoil
on: July 06, 2019, 04:07:29 AM
I saw a couple of these on eBay, and they look like an mp600 with exterior tools instead of interior. Looks really cool... other than the smaller tool load out, what’s the catch? Why didn’t these catch on?

Charles.

I vaguely recall some initial interest, then a few injuries, then they kinda faded away. Missed the mark in some fashion or another.

Here's some threads

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,1681.msg199197.html#msg199197

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,74644.msg1588028.html#msg1588028

I have not read them (unless I read them in the past) but they were the most apparently relevant finds on searching "Recoil" on the forum.

The Recoil is a "see it to believe it" tool. They are weird and gangly to use. Dangerous as well, like Sea Monster stated.

They feel cheap, the pliers spring is 10x stronger than necessary, the tools are hard to extract and poorly executed, and it is smaller than the photos convey(pliers opening is very small). I could go on, and could only recommend it to MT collectors as a piece of interest.

Ok I've got one and while I agree it's unusual I also dispute the idea it's actually dangerous.

IIRC Chako may not agree with you re the danger .... ;)

I think another drawback is not many component tools for the overall size.

I'm also sure Dan was over egging the pudding in terms of likelihood. ;)  So sure was I in fact that I went so far as to try and replicate his trail to no ill effect.  Honestly I think the chances and circumstances to do yourself a mischief are so tiny as to not to be a concern.

Okay. So are the plier heads comparable to mp600 heads? Or are they smaller? It’s an interesting tool, but flicking a gerber open is still pretty cool too. Sounds like there are a lot of drawbacks keeping it from being a good EDC.

Charles.

Sorry, I don't have access to my gear ATM but I'd say just a bit smaller than the MP600 IIRC.  The Recoil is fun I'd say but it's not one I ever think of carrying for serious use.

I still have one put away somewhere. When I first got it I played with it a lot but never carried it.

Oh I wasn't over egging it at all. I still wince at the ball shot mine gave me. Mind you, I guess I was just very unlucky. However, with that said...once hit...twice shy.  :ahhh

The Recoil is an interesting footnote in the history of multi-tools. The spring is powerful enough that I found it easier to push on something hard to re-arm the pliers into the body. It doesn't have much in the terms of functionality, but then, the plier action is where it is at with the Recoil. I feel every collector needs an example if you are at all interested in Gerber designs. As for a user, there are fare more elegant and functional packages out there.  :salute:

Yeah I’m interested in elegant USER tools. I’m looking for those elusive tools that are both.

And that is why I mod all my tools :)

Currently carrying a modded center drive with a pro scout saw holder in place of the awl and serrated blade. And a pocket clip for EDC.  Already needed and used the saw once!  I also have a modded blunt nosed mp600 and a modded diesel, both with pocket clips. Diesel has only minor changes, but mp600 Has a tool load out unique to me, with several diesel parts modded in. I used to carry the mp600 daily until I got the center drive.

Still, always looking for something “perfect” to carry.
CD is good, it’s in the right direction, but I’m not a big fan of needle nosed pliers.

Charles.
