Serrating a blade
on: February 15, 2019, 05:02:18 PM
I'm thinking of trying to create a serrated blade from a standard Sak blade. Has any one ever done anything like this before?

Any tips?

Thanks

I think both the serrated blades of Wenger and Victorinox started out as normal blades. So it has been done before.

They likely used custom grinding wheels to do it - think like these for instance: http://www.picard-kg.com/index.php/en/products-en/grinding-tools/82-schleifwerkzeuge/371-serration-grinding-fapi-serra

For a one off custom I guess round files might be way to go? Possibly in combination with a rig of some kind to get it all even. A dremel or straight grinder or something in that category should make it easier.

:iagree: That's the way it's done at the factory.

I did this for fun on an over-sharpened broken tip (trash) blade:

Not my best work, but I had that picture uploaded and I think you'd get the idea. I just wanted to see if I could quickly reproduce the factory "60% serration" like on the Matterhorn, Rainier and (smurf it - can't remember the third one)

I used stones and files and it was pretty easy.  I'd recommend using the Lansky system or something similar for sharpening it. That's more important IMO, than doing the initial cutting. Initial cutting and shaping can be pretty rough...as long as you know how to sharpen it.

The real trick is restoring serrated blades that are improperly sharpened or worn to the top of the serration marks.

Craggus, I have an old 91mm serrated main blade you can have. It shouldn't be too difficult to sharpen.

Pm me your address and I'll pop it in the post for you if you're interested.
