30-day axe challenge
on: February 17, 2019, 09:04:38 PM
I'm putting this idea out early, to give as many people a chance to join in as possible: a 30-day axe challenge!

The axe was one of mankind's earliest tools. It got invented more or less the day after stone knapping was invented; I think it was a Thursday.   And the axe is still a popular tool today, so there must be something useful in it's design.

Here's the idea: participants will try to maximize the use and uses of an axe for 30 days, in order to learn the full capabilities of these great tools.

Here are my proposed rules for the challenge, we could change them as need, but they are mostly in-line with any standard 30-day challenge:

Each participant shall carry and/or use an axe (or axes), hatchet, or tomahawk for 30 days. I may not be possible to carry an axe all-day, every day, but you can try to use it in lieu of other edged tools.
Each participant in the challenge shall post a photo of his or her axe for every day of the 30-day period.
Every effort will be made to use the axe as a primary tool for the duration of the challenge, to the exclusion of other tools as possible.
If another tool, e.g. a Swiss Army Knife, is used, participants shall be expected to provide an explanation as to why the axe wasn't capable of performing the job, e.g. "It seemed odd to open a box of copier paper at work using my tomahawk, so I used a Skeletool instead."
Participants are expected to use their axes in a safe and lawful manner during the challenge. Don't take your axe to work if that is frowned upon....or get a better job.

There are quite a few challenges lined-up in the near future, and, since it's most fun to use axes outdoors, I think we should run this first-ever MTo 30-day axe challenge in the Summer or Fall. I've added a poll to this thread (no pun intended) for people to vote on the month they would like to do this challenge. We'll try to go with a majority vote.  :tu:

Please, vote only if you want to participate. Thanks.

I don't expect this will be an easy challenge. It's harder to lug a battle axe around than it is to pocket a Victorinox Executive. Still, I suspect this challenge could be very educational and a lot of fun. I hope we can get a few intrepid axe fans to join in!

-- Nix

p.s.  I have requested a badge be created for this challenge. The early indication is that this request will be approved...nothing official yet, but if a few of us complete this, I think a badge is likely to be developed.  :tu:

Actually, I don't think so either. An axe is a wonderful tool, and 30 days with one will be a breeze.......   ;)

I sense a certain hesitation in the force........

Please keep in mind that for this challenge, like most other challenges, you aren't required to take your axe, hatchet, or tomahawk to work. (If you have a job where an axe is useful, that's a different matter.)

Likewise, it is not recommended to carry your axe into the grocery store, bank, or post office. I'd also discourage participants from taking axes into movie theaters, restaurants, and bars.  Although there are some pretty cool bars out there where axes may be tolerated.

For most of us, our axe use will be limited to mornings before work, evenings after work, days off, and holidays. If you are tempted by this challenge, but think it might be too much of a hassle.....reconsider. The demands of this challenge are relatively light, and merely designed to showcase these great tools for a month.

i'm all for doing this in July or August as this challenges are really tough when the schedule gets this crazy
Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob
