Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

This came across my radar:

I plan on making a mask like this before the challenge gets started. I want to be able to carry Lyndax around as much as possible, and a mask is a definite requirement for me.

I like the video, and this guy does some nice clean work. Kuddos to him for that.  :hatsoff:

However, since I have never made an axe mask, I'll play internet-guru and feel free to criticize his design a bit:

1. Leather tends to bunch when folded over, so it's a good idea to cut a relief groove or channel along fold lines. Necessary? No. But a good idea. In the end, the flap of his mask tends to flair open, a groove along the flap's fold may have minimized this gap.

...and,

2. The rivets are cool. I haven't decided if I'm going with rivets or a stitched front closure, yet. However....I'm giving this mask grade of C- for having no welt along the front. A welt would protect the edge from the rivets. As the sheath loosens up with time and use, the edge of the axe will end up banging into those rivets. Not good. I plan on keeping my axe sharp--part of the point of a mask--so a welt is, in my opinion, mandatory.

Overall a nice design. I'm going to copy it and use it to make Lyndax a set of leathers.  :tu:

I agree, Nix. No welt is less ideal, though if the metal rivets are softer than the steel of the axe it may not necessarily cause edge damage, but given the choice I'd rather have it. Would be a definite must for the longevity of a stitched mask.
This style is similar to the one that came with my Husqvarna forest axe, which has no welt, and if I get some new rivets I'll probably put a welt in.

I agree, TR.  I doubt brass rivets would damage the edge, but they can dull it.

I need to get going on my second handle attempt. Summer (here) is flying by and I think this challenge is going to be epic.  :tu:

I'll bring myself up to speed on the last 37 pages, but Choptober will coincide nicely with the end of September's Modified SAK challenge. And bow hunting starts here on Oct. 5th. Please sign me up. A mini Gransfors or their Wildlife hatchet being the most likely choices. Perhaps a Fiskars thrown in depending on task.
