Tested the hawk today First impressions are: I like it :like: It's sharp and well balanced. Not sure about the spike though.

Cool looking 'hawk, RF. It strongly reminds my of the LaGana tomahawk.

I can imagine the spike could be quite useful for all sorts of tasks (aside from stabbing through an enemy's helmet), but it does also seem to pose a bit of risk to the user. Be careful with that bad boy!   :tu:

Thanks
Had to google that one, but you are right, it is very similar :like:
It is probably useful, but maybe not so much in the woods :dunno:
Only thing I'm sure of is that it would be a bad day if I got that spike in my eye or something

Here's another axe I'm considering for the challenge. I've clean it up and sharpened it. Oiled the handle with linseed oil. It still needs a bit more work, but is mostly in excellent shape.

The edge will still need a bit of work: it slices thick paper but isn't shaving sharp yet. I like this axe, but the head is fairly heavy (around 2 pounds). This is a bit of an oddity, since it has an axe-head on a hatchet handle (~19"). The handle is just long enough to use two-handed, although it is a skinny handle. While this axe would bring a bit more horsepower to the challenge, it might be a bit heavy for 'EDC' use when hiking or fishing or hunting.

Sort of a first-world problem, I know.

And I'm still looking around for a restoration project.

Thanks, guys.

I think this is a very versatile pattern. I think it's considered a Hudson Bay or Voyager pattern.

Those SOG hawks are nice. Actually planning on using the smaller Fasthawk for this. I also have a Camillus bearded hatchet that seems like it would do awesome in the kitchen.
My Fiskars camp axe and hardware store hatchets will most likley be sitting this one out. I simply don't "live" in the woods the way I used to.

I am however also toying with getting something new and unconventional. So here are a couple that I was looking at.

Farson Hatchet:
Fremont knives made the Farson blade which is a D shaped survival tool that looks kind of like a herb chopper and then after customer feedback put out a hatchet version with a handle. To me they look like a miniature Ontario SPAX air crew rescue axe w/o the spike
The back stories on these are they are based on a stone hand axe found in the Arizona desert.

Tops FDX-17/18 Mini Axe
While it is a normal one piece axe it is so small with only a 2.5in blade anf 7in over all. It really is pushing the limits of axe v knife. But Tops does list it with their axes.
I really like the look of this but question its utility.

So here I am on the fence about getting a new toy...
Any thoughts?

I'll preface my thoughts here by saying that I'm no authority on axes, and it would be a moderator decision as to whether or not those tools would qualify as axes. This is just my 2¢ in the conversation.

That Tops 'tool' looks like a fun tool and a useful knife. It doesn't really read 'axe' to me, especially at that size. It seems more like an Ulu-Axe hybrid, much like the one Ken used in the Fixie challenge.

Especially at that size, I think it would be used like a knife more than an axe. Again, that's just me.   :dunno:

On the other hand, that Farson is really cool and does read 'axe' to me. I would love to see that in the challenge. That seems like a great all-around chopping/cutting tool. And bottle opener. Which is important. Especially in the desert.  ;)

OK, that's my 2¢.

As far as I'm concerned, the challenge is here for you to make it what you want and what would benefit you (and the rest of us vicariously).   :tu:

Yes. I could see that Farson being tossed into a hunting pack, even a fishing pack. Might make a great little tool for backpacking or car camping. It remains to be sen how well it would do as a chopper--the geometry is there, but in may lack the mass.

Everything in tool design is a trade-off, right?

Why isn't Sparky in this challenge yet?

Somebody, please, go wake him up and get him involved in this one....... :pok:

As I said the FDX is more knife.

The Farson is curious as many would confuse it with a cleaver (an asthetic shared by Condor Thorax)
I have plenty of actual axes and hawks to do the challenge. I am really  just looking for excuses to buy more.

I am also thinking of also pocketing a hawk head without shaft instead of my knife.(which is a historicly accurate use)

Fiscars Medium axe (same as "gerber sport" if I remember model sizes correctly)

Untied VietnamHawk replica w/ Vaughn 14in framing hammer handle instead of the stock 10in ballpeen type

Sog FastHawk

Camillus bearded Hatchet

Stanley joke

Hawk, hand forged by a friend who is Seneca. This was my go to while hiking/hunting for several years and has gone through a few handles.

Note: not pictured 2 cheap hardware store hatchets

I gave my axe a little extra attention today. It's now slicing fine paper cleanly and shaves fairly well. Not 'hair-popping' sharp, but hair cutting sharp anyway.

Seems to exfoliate well, too.

While the edge could still be improved a bit, I think it is challenge ready!

(still not sure which axe I'll use though....... )
