Fuzzaxe Day 17

Right... I know I said I was going to experiment a bit using solely the axehead as a woodworking tool. Well... I didn't, I did something else instead.

The veg patch up here was starting to get quite badly overshadowed by trees, an ash and sycamore in particular, and I'm pretty sure it's impacted detrimentally on the quality of veg this year. So, I decided to remove the boughs that were the worst offenders and open it up a bit whilst hopefully not spoiling the trees too much.

Now to do this I just removed limbs in sections using a 12' pole saw, being careful not to hospitalise myself in the process, and it was an easy enough job. But now I've got about a dozen or so bough sections the size of a small tree that need to be chopped up, sorted and stored on the stick pile for next year's winter. What would be an ideal tool to do this?... FUZZAXE!!!  :ahhh... runs off like a small ungainly child to fetch it...

I fitted the longer handle to Fuzzaxe for the job so I could get a really good snap to my blows and he worked SPLENDIDLY breaking them down. It was a hugely enjoyable and satisfying process cleanly severing inch thick limbs with a single glance of the axe.

Anyway, the pics...

Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

Day 17:

No use today, but I found another project axe I have lying around :tu:
Now I just need a couple of handles and give them a new edge.
Would the bigger one work with a straight sledgehammer handle? Any thoughts would be much aprecciated
And the smaller one I might get a handle that is too big and shape it to fit

Great job cleaning up those axes, Borg!  Excellent work.

Nice clean cuts there, Fuzzy. Something wonderfully satisfying about limbing trees, branches, and zombies.  Nice work!

Messed about in the garden until the rain started. No uses for Lyndax, but nice to have her slid under the belt....just in case.... ;)

Tazzie, Liquid nails might do, but a straightforward two-part epoxy would, too.

Yeah, I already have some of that so probably worth a go, save buying a full tube of something else that I'll barely use and then go off on me  :salute:

No use? Surely you can fine ONE branch to hoe chop into?

Actually, where is your balance point on Lyndax? Bruce's was maybe 20cm/8" back on the longer handle, now maybe 10cm/4" with the shorter handle. I'd think with the heavier head, yours would have a closer balance point with the same length handle than mine

Day 18

On my new handle, I'm going to have to watch very carefully when I get to the meaty end, I was trying to correct the alignment of the edge to the end of the handle, but didn't notice I'd rotated slightly one way.

Another of my dead trees after last summer. I was able to push this one over after Bruce took some limbs off
