Yes, word on the street has it that you are a big fan of a big knob.

And good for you!  Axes give us a huge range of styles and designs, pick the one that suits you.

Aye, the friction fit really appeals - it'll be more usable for me if I can swap different sized handles or use the axe head as wood scraper... Also, I like the idea that, if I wanted to, I can fit a standard handle to it at a later date... with a dirty big knob.

As long as your knob can fit through the eye of that head, you'll have a good time... Otherwise I foresee too much friction...

Yes indeed! I really like the Western axes in the video. Most of the double bits around this neck of the woods are Michigan pattern double bits. I've got a really nice True Temper Kelly Perfect Western pattern that needs to be hung. Which I hope to get done before the challenge gets started.

I found myself grazing through eBay this morning, looking for project axes.

A couple of nice looking double-bit axes there....... I want one, but I'm not sure how much use it would see......but, still, I know, from having used one in the past, that they swing wonderfully because of the balance......

This challenge is getting out of control.  ;)

:iagree: What puts me off getting one is that belting something with the back of an axe, for me anyway, is hugely satisfying.  :tu:

3 more added to the pool, another 2 Elwells and an unknown hatchet, i remember using the middle one a few years back but stopped using it as it was rotten and the head would fly off, you know the type, nails and screws battered in to tighten it up as the wedges fell out probably 40 years ago.. the bigger one i forgot about so it was a surprise find  :tu:

I'm going to stop looking now, this is going to cost me a fortune in handles  :D

Some (potentially) excellent Axes there!  :tu: those little half-moon hatchet's (I forget what they're called) are so common in Scotland  - it's like every shed here has at least two or three rusting away. Anybody know why?

I might be wrong but i would say a Kent pattern hatchet ? No clue of maker but my one has No2 stamped on it, probably there are many around as they were well made and cheap to buy, or they were crap and nobody used them  :dunno:

Lots of potential there.    :tu:

Yep, i don't see any cracks so hopefully they will be fine, i will see better once the rust is off  :tu:

Thanks Nix, thanks Barry  :salute:

Today i removed the handle on the small project axe, when drilling i noticed it had two wedges so that's good, they can be reused.. i must admit it's the first brass wedges i have seen, very posh  :woohoo:

They look like one of those old window catch things ripped in two, i put one in to show what i mean..or bits of a hinge or something  :dunno:  who knows, but it raised a smile as although it wasn't my doing, its the sort of thing i would have done 20 years ago, i won't bother reusing them but to be fair the person that did it at least made an effort to make them pointy
